The IMF take down some mobsters so funny-looking that they would have been right at home in a "Dick Tracy" strip
bribabylk26 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I found this two-parter to have some of the most hilarious suspension-of-disbelief-required moments yet, though it was all the more fun and exciting because of it.

I don't know which part had me howling the most: 1) That Cinnamon could get major newspapers to publish a fake story about a fake but "well-known" U.S. Senator with fake pictures, or 2) that she could remove Rollie's disguise whilst pretending to give him silicone injections when they were being closely observed on ALL SIDES by mobsters, just by holding a towel kinda sorta over her hand as she was peeling away the latex, or 3) Peter Graves walking around with this false, hollow, half torso on his back as he gets into a car, then ducking down, leaving the half torso in the driver's seat, so it looks like he's still sitting there as seen from behind, then dropping through a hole cut in the floor of the car into a sewer manhole. Actually, I DO know; it's that last bit that really had me holding my sides.

Still, lest anyone think I didn't enjoy these episodes, rest assured that's not the case. Pretty exciting and interesting as always, especially watching all the effort they go to with the drilling and the sawing and the elaborate preparations. And there's a neat use of split screen toward the end, which I hadn't seen M:I use before, showing parallel elevator shafts that come into play with some nifty "sleight of hand." All in all, not very believable, but don't let that get in your way of the fun.

THE ULTIMATE FAKE OUT. DO NOT MISS THIS!
tcchelsey28 January 2024
PART II CONCLUSION.

This two part adventure obviously was written as a ratings grab, and it had to have worked. By far, one of, if not the BEST episode from the first two seasons.

Everything clicks; the acting, the writing, and applause for the incredible makeup. Popular dramatic actor Paul Stevens stars as Frank Wayne, and is the whole show. He's a ruthless money grubber whose illegal activities may actually endanger the US economy. The M. I. team is recruited to snatch Wayne's books from his safe --which happens to be in his office!

To get into Wayne's office, the team has no choice but to make a clever "switch." Wayne is knocked out and Rollin takes his place, but undergoing a makeup change (with Cinnamon as the master artist) to hide his real face because he's a wanted man. Get it? This is all done in front of his men so they won't suspect anything, believing they are talking to Wayne --but it's actually Rollin.

One of the best scenes has Rollin unable to close the safe while he's clicking pictures of the hot books, and Wayne's men are pounding on the door, wanting to enter. Classic M. I. tension on steroids.

A salute to iconic actor Eduardo Ciannelli as the big BOSS, called Rycher, who enters the picture and will make a decision as to whether Wayne will stay with the mob or be eliminated! The next terrific scene is where the "real" Wayne (who is unconscious) is made up to look like Rollin! A bit confusing, but it works like a charm.

The inside joke to all of this is that if both Rollin and Cinnamon had that kind of talent for re-creating faces, they would have probably made a fortune in Hollywood as makeup artists --and less dangerous work!

Great suppot from Vincent Gardenia as mobster Vito, and looking lethal, and Paul lambert as Al. This should have at least gotten an Emmy nonimation for best story.

Best of the Best. SEASON 2 EPISODE 12 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set, 7 dvds total. 2007 release.

The conclusion to a relatively weak episode...
planktonrules24 April 2014
I have always been a fan of "Mission: Impossible", but I am not blind to the problems the series had. When the team went on missions into enemy countries, it was at its best. In episodes where they battled organized crime domestically (this got much more common in the later shows), the premise really made no sense. After all, if the team was willing to break 1001 laws to get mobsters to kill each other AND the team members always stood a chance of getting caught and killed, why didn't they just shoot the criminal in the face and be done with it?! These episodes were definitely focused solely on entertainment--not on making the shows very plausible.

In "The Council" (both parts 1 and 2), the IM Force is trying to get mobsters to kill each other as well as getting others to testify against their 'friends'. Again, a bullet to the face should have sufficed, but instead the team members design a complicated plan with plenty of plot holes.

This one picks up with the mobster, Frank (Rollin in disguise--wearing one of those cool masks), announcing that he's NOT running away now that he's murdered a US Marshall. He has a makeup and plastic surgery (of sorts) expert (Cinnamon) come and give him a new face--whereas in actuality she just peels off the mask and acts like she's giving him silicone injections and more. Now the mob feels like they can relax and they are so cocky that they beat up a special prosecutor (Jim Phelps). What's next? See the show.

The bottom line is that this is a VERY complicated plan--most of which was unnecessary. Entertaining, certainly, but not especially logical or even close to being as good as an average episode. But, it is slightly less illogical than episode 1.

2 part disaster

They were willing to kill the "plastic surgeon", but they bring in a floozy to tell her its "Frank." Love the show more now than as a teen when it was new. Eapecially the clothes and cars.
