Oh noes, Ben is mugged after his car breaks down. Poor guy. Of course, we get to hear and see his crankiness which as usual ends up being funny.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. There are still slum landlords. Even more now than before. They want to collect the money, and have the write-off but do not follow the law when it comes to looking after the upkeep of buildings. Slum rhymes with scum. Seems fitting. I'm sure some capitalist ideologists would love this guy. Kind of reminds me of a famous real estate developer back in the 80s in New York. He was also a germaphobe like the slum landlord here in this episode and also did not like to shake hands with people. I wonder if this character was based on him? I'm guessing it was. A fitting and accurate depiction from 1995.
I love that Ben wants to help out Stan Johnson and the tenants of that building. This was a different one as there was no murder, but an attack against the slum landlord. And another difference is that Ben didn't have the evidence to catch him in a lie. Instead Ben uses a tactic in court which got him hauled out by the judge. It was clever and funny. Ben won the case. The slum landlord had faked his own attack and framed Stan. I love the way he got Stan off while also making sure everyone knew what slummy had done and the type of landlord he was.
I thought the ending when Ben had his surprise birthday party in the courtroom, which was set up by Cliff, Jerri, and Billy, was great. Later when Ben went back to the dark empty courtroom and gazed at it happy, and perhaps a bit sad, I thought this would have made a perfect series finale ending. Then I read the trivia on this site and discovered this was indeed initially intended to be the series finale. I have already seen the finale which is out of order on the streaming service I'm watching, so it's not the ending there. But anyway, I think if you're rewatching this again you could always watch this one last. It seems such a fitting ending to the series. 8/10.
