The Fat Guy Delivers
Hitchcoc1 March 2017
Two significant plot lines here. A doctor appears on Sue Ann's show and talks about the implications of fatty foods. Lou walks into the newsroom and scarfs down three eclairs. Mary worries about his weight. Their conversation in the office is wonderful as he warns her about calling him "fat." He is insulted and carries on throughout the whole episode. Mary gets railroaded into inviting everyone over to watch Sue Ann's show. Georgette talks her into inviting Ted and Georgette. Georgette is due to give birth at any time. Of course, she goes into labor and everyone has to get into the act. Ted becomes catatonic. It's the amazing events when there is a birth and no one knows anything. Well, with no doctor, there is one person.

Pivotal events

Funny assured comedy where everything flows along nicely.

Sue Ann tapes a show where cholesterol is discussed. In a great scene Lou is offended when Mary suggests he lose weight. Sue Ann has Mary host a dinner so the newsroom regulars can watch her show. Ted and the heavily pregnant Georgette want to come along too.

Like many of Mary's parties there are problems. A petulant Lou wont stop with the fat comments. Georgette starts having contractions but a calm Ted is on top of the situation, timing them with his new stopwatch... except cheapskate Ted bought the cheapest watch available.

Great acting and comedy throughout. Ted is especially funny.

Warning: Spoilers
Georgette is close to her due date and after a special on obesity Mary is worried about the health of her friend and boss Lou Grant . Sue Ann gets Mary to produce the special and then gets Mary to host a dinner party to watch it ! Sue Ann is such a gushing, pushy type! By now Mary is pretty good at voicing her opinion but not necessarily at always refusing the demands of others.

Mary doesn't invite Ted and Georgette as the birth is close but Georgette pleads with Mary or it's more listening to Ted talk baby talk to her stomach.

Meanwhile Mary and Lou go many rounds about her voicing concern about his health and diet.

Of course Georgette goes into labor at the dinner party and Ted , Murray and Mary fall apart. Murray " I couldn't even watch when we adopted!" Lou takes over. He carries Georgette into the bedroom and carries Ted out of the bedroom! . Murray tells Mary she should help. Mary " a delivery room is no place for a woman!" Ted's voice goes strange and his legs give out! Ted Knight gives a brilliant performance.

Finally Lou gets Mary in their and they deliver a beautiful baby girl named Mary Lou.

A nice moment between Mary and Lou afterwards although he wants it over of course!

Well written and acted all around.

Sue Ann is helpful to a point but remains largely detached and delivering the zingers as usual.

A strong, funny and touching start to what would be the final season .
