Nice noir homage

Warning: Spoilers
Magnum wakes in in 1936 and at first believes Higgins is playing an elaborate joke but decides he is in a dream and might as well enjoy it. He gets involved in a murder decides to make the most of it. T.C. is an auto mechanic as "coloreds" aren't allowed to be pilots. Higgins is still a majordomo but has had to adjust to the depression by organizing croquet as polo is considered a ostentatious display of wealth. Rick is still managing the club but now sports a mustache. Anne Lochart is the damsel in distress with a father falsely accused of murder. There are plenty of jokes playing off the time change such as Magnum warning a suspect to go easy on the smoking as it turns out it is bad for your health. A good episode to watch while having a cigar and a scotch.

Directed by Ivan Dixon

Warning: Spoilers
Flashback was groundbreaking in many ways because it was directed by Ivan Dixon, who at the time was one of the few African-American directors. This episode is lots of fun, as we see Magnum and the rest of the crew all dressed up in a flashback scene that allows Magnum to solve the crime in the present day.

It's hard to believe this episode is 40 years old, but Magnum is a TV series that lives on and on and on. I have recorded the episode of Murder, She Wrote that starred Tom Selleck - it was a crossover. But unfortunately I haven't been able to record the Magnum episode with Jessica Fletcher.

Magnum 1936 - a great vintage

When Magnum appears to wake in the year 1936, he begins an investigation into the murder of a construction magnate and the possibility that the father of his client (played by the stunning Anne Lockhart, who also appeared in the first season's episode "Lest We Forget") has been framed.

This is a great homage to the old detective yarns. Magnum has a fun time exploring this alternative state and there's lots to be be enjoyed for the viewer.

10 out of 10. I love "Magnum, P.I." so much because it's always delivering the unexpected. It's incredibly experimental and rarely predictable. Another top drawer episode. Keep your eyes peeled for the feral cat that nearly becomes a door mat!
