"You Have Unsual Friends"
Tim-31119 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is one of many "Damsel in Distress" cases Magnum takes on. Basically a woman, Mai Ling, must honor her family and their charge in guarding a sacred vase called the "Soul of Song". There is a Tong warrior/assassin pursuing her from China as the vase has great value to the communist/nationalists. Mai Ling enlists Magnum to protect her and the vase until her cousin can take the vase to a new safe hiding place. Of course the thug assassin catches up to them, gets the girl and demands the vase in return. In the end Magnum and his pals all work together so that the girl and the vase are saved and the bad guy is dead.

I liked the episode, didn't love it. Particularly the way the beginning was handled. We see Magnum in TC's chopper and Magnum is complaining in his voice over about TC going on and on about finding this "China Doll" and starting in on Mai Ling again. Wait a minute...what China Doll? Who is Mai Ling? What the hell is he talking about? The premise is just kind of dropped in the viewers lap and it really didn't make much sense. I mean we can catch up pretty quick but it seemed like they started without us.

Some good parts to the episode - 1) Higgins genuine disappointed look when Magnum 1st arrives at the estate and the dogs are not attacking him. He meets up with Magnum only to find that Mai Ling has charmed the "lads". 2) This is the 1st appearance of the iconic Detroit Tigers baseball cap. 3) At one point Mai Ling says "You have some unusual friends". The importance of friends is a theme that runs through Magnum's life, previously in the Navy and now in civilian life. Same guys, just different environment. Instead of running missions, they're now working on "cases" and Magnum couldn't and can't have successful outcomes without his buddies.

Some odd parts - 1) The Tong assassin drugs Mai Ling and leaves her on the beach. OK, I get that. But really, are we to think that nobody, on a crowded beach, would think to check on a bikini clad-woman who has been lying in the sun, unmoving for 9 hours? 2) Why, out of nowhere, in the cemetery scene do we hear the "6 Million Dollar Man" sound effect not once but twice? You know....the background music when Steve Austin would start to run or throw or jump. Just odd is all.

Episode Body Count: Women kissed = 1, Bad guys shot & killed by Magnum = 1

Running Body Count: Episodes = 3, Women kissed = 2, Bad guys shot & killed by Magnum = 2

Magnum P.I. reveals its gritty side early in its first season
DVD_Connoisseur25 September 2018
"China Doll" is a surprisingly violent episode with a martial arts trained killer on the rampage in Hawaii.

The bustling scenes of the tourist side of the island are superbly shot and the episode is competently directed by creator Donald P. Bellisario.

8 out of 10.

the blinking assassin... an iconic scene
Jon-nel4 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a mixed bag of the interesting and the cheesy. The interesting parts are the priceless "Soul of Song" vase, the Tong assassin tracking it, and Mai Ling, a love interest of Magnum.

Some of the cheesy included the loud argument between Magnum and T.C. at the beginning of the episode in front of paying clients. It was meant to characterize their friendship, loud and boisterous, I get it, but experienced military men would not be discussing personal business so loudly and obliviously in front of strangers. It was over the top. Also, some of the acting was wooden, but they usually made the best of it. For example the stoic Cousin Ho: "Hi Ho" "Bye Ho."

The deadly Tong assassin with the Red Dragon tattoo on his hand and lightening-quick reflexes had a tell... he blinked just before he struck. He kidnaps Mai Ling and holds her hostage for the vase. Magnum remembers where Mai Ling had come from just before they met and the chase for the real vase leads back to a Chinese cemetery on Kauai.

The "tell" of the blinking Tong assassin works to great effect in what I consider to be an iconic scene of this series: when Magnum holds a .45 to the Tong assassin's head as he is about to strike and tells him "no one is that quick." We see the Tong blink; simultaneously a shot is fired and the scene fades to black.

This episode is worth watching for that scene alone as well as some funny moments like Rick undercover as a lazy pedicab driver. 7.5/10.

One of the best ep of the series
MiketheWhistle3 March 2020
To me, this is one of the best ep's of the series. It has action, banter, the dogs, Mag being a hero, and good acting.

It also shows something that happened throughout the series, but not regularly which is death and in this ep frankly quite a bit of it.

I think part of the reason I like is the killer does a great job. I've not looked to see what else he's been in, but I think he did a really good job. Mai Ling did an ok job, but I don't know I'd say great.

There was a need for a second strong episode to keep the viewers watching.

Warning: Spoilers
There was a need for a second strong episode to keep the viewers watching. China Doll delivered! A story like the Maltese Falcon. Deception and plot twists keep the viewer guess, while Magnum must face a quick martial art assassin. There is a chase a vase, which one is the real vase mixed with Higgens, T C and Rick characters add spice to the story. China Doll delivers. Magnum narration adds an extra for the story and series, which gets the viewers hooked. 7 stars.

Susie Elene guest stars as Mai Ling
safenoe20 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here this episode, China Doll, opens with the original Magnum theme by Ian Freebairn-Smith, whose daughter has commented about the theme, and why it was dropped mid-way into season one. Anyway, the original theme is quite jazzy and reminds of me CHiPs.

Susie Elene guest stars as Mai Ling in an episode that Bruce Lee would have been proud of really. Anyway, the martial arts sequences were quite impressive, with Magnum displaying his fighting skills. Soon after this episode, Tom Selleck was cast as Indiana Jones, but the role ended up going to Harrison Ford and the rest is history.

The beach scenes were gorgeous and lush.
