Great start to the second season

"Billy Joe Bob" is a solid start to this second season of "Magnum, P.I."

With no more opening tease required now that the series had established itself, the episode dives straight into the exciting titles and the "Magnum" theme.

James Whitmore Jr. plays the Billy Joe Bob of the title. It's a good performance and the actor provides a good foil to Selleck's Private Investigator.

John Hillerman is terrific as always.

8 out of 10.

A modest start

I should state right now that 'Billy Joe Bob' is my introduction to "Magnum P.I.". Not really sure why I didn't start from the show's beginning, but here we are. And it's a good episode, but a curious launching point for a second season; usually, that's when a show adopts its confidence, wrinkles smoothed out, ready to get the new season going.

There's action here, sure, with a punch-first-ask-later Texan strolling in in search of his missing sister. All signs point to her occupation as a well-to-do call girl, and murder at the hands of a drug-pushing pump. But it goes deeper than that as the police are secretly involved and the Texan's thirst for revenge threatens to blow the case.

But it's Magnum's having a heart and begrudgingly taking the case (in spite of its no-doubt bleak resolution) that sold me. If the show has more of this beyond just the Ferrari and exotic locations, then count me in.

7/10

Punchline

Warning: Spoilers
James Whitmore, Jr guest stars in Billy Joe Bob, and James become quite an accomplished television director. Anyway, there are numerous punches thrown in this episode and I was wondering what the punchline was, pardon the pun.

Anyway, for me I like the early seasons of Magnum, P. I, especially the sun-drenched scenes on the beach and the Hawaiian greenery and the bustling street scenes.

It's hard to believe the early seasons debuted over 40 years ago, but it's timeless.

Anyway, Billy Joe Bob is quite the character and did I say he punches a lot. So does Magnum to make sure balance is restored.
