- Hawkeye returns from R&R to find out Trapper has been discharged. He rushes to the airport to say goodbye but misses him. But it gives him an opportunity to welcome Trapper's replacement, B.J., to Korea.
- Hawkeye returns from R&R in Tokyo to find Trapper John has been sent home. Frank and Hotlips are letting power go to their beady little heads. Trapper's replacement, whose file inspires hope in the small heart of Hotlips, is Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. Two months ago, he was doing his residency in Sausalito with his wife, Peggy, eight months pregnant in their Mill Valley home. Hawkeye and Radar welcome B.J. to Korea by impersonating an officer and stealing a General's Jeep to return to the 4077.—LA-Lawyer
- A week after Henry Blake's sudden death en route home, Major Frank Burns has now assumed control of the 4077th, attempting to bend the surgeons and staff to his will. But he can't even get Klinger out of his dresses. Hawkeye Pierce returns relaxed, and hung over, from R&R in Tokyo. He hits the showers when Radar enters and tells him of Trapper McIntyre receiving his walking papers and was currently en route to the airport in Kimpo. Hawkeye quickly sobers up and springs into action. Even though Major Burns denied him leave, Hawkeye goes anyway. He steals a Jeep and, with Radar in tow, races to Kimpo just in time to learn Trapper had left 10 minutes prior to their arrival. That's when they meet Trapper's replacement: a clean-cut, All American, family man, Captain B.J. Hunnicut. En route back to the 4077th, Hawkeye, Radar and B.J. stop to help a Korean family stranded in the mine field, as well as change a tire. They finally make it back, after stopping for a few drinks, and B.J. greets Frank for the first time by saying, "How goes it, ferret face?"—<Explorerds6789>
- A week after Henry Blake's sudden death en route home, Major Frank Burns (Larry Linville) has now assumed control of the 4077th, attempting to bend the surgeons and staff to his will. But he can't even get Klinger (Jamie Farr) out of his dresses. Even Father Mulcahy is forced to call out Frank's lies, when he berates the unit for being 2 secs late than before in assembly.
In a contrived plot where Hawkeye (Alan Alda) takes a separate R&R in Tokyo from fellow Swamp Rat, Trapper. Hawkeye returns back to the 4077 in a rickshaw, heavily hung over. Hawkeye Pierce returns relaxed, and hung over, from R&R in Tokyo. He hits the showers when Radar enters (he says they tried to reach him to Tokyo for 24 hrs, but Hawkeye was not reachable) and tells him of Trapper McIntyre receiving his walking papers and was currently en route to the airport in Kimpo. Hawkeye quickly sobers up and springs into action. Frank and Hotlips are letting power go to their beady little heads, not realizing the Army never entrusts the command of 100+ Army souls to an officer with less than the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Our Trapper is already gone (with the same ill wind that took Henry Blake) and America never gets to say a real farewell to Trapper John Francis Xavier McIntyre. Even though Major Burns denied him leave, Hawkeye goes anyway. Radar informs Frank that Trapper's replacement, Captain BJ Hunnicut is due at Kimpo airport within the next hour. Radar is given permission to go pick him up. Houlihan looks at Hunnicut's file and is impressed with his qualifications. He sounds their kind of person and they are excited to have one more person on their side, whom they can train in their proper military ways.
He steals a Jeep and, with Radar (Gary Burghoff) in tow, races to Kimpo just in time to learn Trapper had left 10 minutes prior to their arrival. The young replacement, whose file inspires hope in the small heart of Hotlips, is Captain B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell). Two months ago, he was doing his residency in Sausalito with his wife, Peggy, eight months pregnant in their Mill Valley home; a five week crash course at Fort Sam Houston was his prelude to the wilds of Hawkeye, Radar and Korea. The jeep Radar signed off to pick up BJ is stolen in Kimpo and that gives Hawkeye a chance to welcome BJ in an officers bar (Hawkeye signs Radar in by pinning BJs bars on Radar's uniform. He gives him a new rank of Corporal Captain) and tell him about Henry, Trapper and Frank. Hawkeye steals a General's jeep from outside the bar and hikes back to the 4077.
En route back to the 4077th, Hawkeye, Radar and B.J. are stopped by the same MP, who had stopped them on their way to Seoul. The MP notices that Hawkeye is driving a different jeep and gives his name as Major Frank Burns. They also stop to help a Korean family stranded in the mine field (The daughters are sent into the field to check for land mines. If they survive, it is considered safe for the ox. One of the daughter's hits a mine and Radar runs in to carry her out. Hawkeye fits the entire family into his jeep and drives them to the nearest local hospital), as well as change a tire (they are hit by sniper fire during the stoppage and this is BJ's first experience of working under fire). Next, they drive by a platoon, who comes under mortar fire, and Hawkeye and BJ have to attend to the wounded in the field. BJ vomits when he sees a badly torn soldier lying dead in the field.
Meanwhile Frank enlists Klinger to clean out the swamp to make a good impression for BJ. They finally make it back, after stopping for a few drinks at Rosie's bar, and B.J. greets Frank for the first time by saying, "How goes it, ferret face?" Frank and Margaret (Loretta Swit) wish they got their paws on BJ first but he was obviously always 100% Swamp Rat. Frank is arrested by MPs for stealing a General's jeep.
