- The senior staff's attempt to help a nurse enter medical school to become a doctor is complicated by her unwanted romantic advances towards Father Mulcahy. Only Charles is unaffected by a drought and water shortage.

Father Mulcahy is helping a new nurse transfer, Lt. Gail Harris. Gail is studying for her medical aptitude test to apply for entry to medical school. - It is dry and smelly and the food is all being served creamed (creamed peas, creamed turnips and creamed beets)...even the wienies. The North Koreans are blockading the roads and the water trucks cant get through to MASH, this is expected to go on for another week. The showers have been rationed (and eventually banned), yet Chuckles is suspiciously clean. Father Mulcahy is helping a new nurse transfer, Lt. Gail Harris (Alexandra Stoddart). Gail is studying for her medical aptitude test to apply for entry to medical school. "Eager" is mistaken for "officious," and Gail alienates several people at 4077 (during surgery she questions Winchester on his choice of specific surgical equipment during his operations. Winchester calls her a pom-pom girl, while he is a Harvard educated doctor with 5 yrs of residency and a attending specialist practice); Margaret has spoken to her about it as her superior officer, to not question doctors about their medical decisions. Some of the nurses now specifically request Houlihan not to be assigned to Harris. Harris complains that she is being harassed due to her desire to become a doctor.
As a man of the cloth, Francis John Patrick Mulcahy understands what it is like to be different and tries to be sympathetic to Harris. When Gail embraces "Johnny," (Mulcahy tells Gail that she is expecting more from him than he can give) it becomes a laughing matter for boorish Hawkeye. Mulcahy had confided in Hawkeye, but he just couldn't stop laughing that a nurse came onto a priest. Harris is hurt by Mulcahy's rejection and is now avoiding him. As the camp steer, Father confides in Hawkeye about the girl trouble. He is deeply upset Gail will quit her studies and wants Hawkeye to talk to her.
Hawkeye agrees to talk to Gail. Hawkeye offers to help Gail with her studies, who figures that Mulcahy spoke to him. She is offended that she will be a laughing stock of the entire camp.. who goes off the rails: to Colonel Potter and asks for an immediate transfer. Potter was in the dark about the whole episode and Gail tells her that she had an unhappy affair with Mulcahy, Hawkeye is talking about her to the whole camp and Houlihan hates her. The CO tells a stunned trio: "You stop talking about her (Hawkeye), you stop hating her (Margaret) and you stop dating her (Mulcahy)!"
BJ and Hawkeye continue to find Winchester clean and shaved and find that he has been using his supply of soda water to bathe himself everyday. They take away his last bottle. Margaret refuses Gails request for transfer. She proves she is becoming a better and more empathetic Head Nurse. She decides that she will tutor Harris for the medical entrance test along with Hawkeye. Houlihan wants to see a woman doctor and wants Gail to succeed. Gail has good taste; when her new tutor tries to hit on her, she opts for the books. "Some guys got it and some guys don't," right, Johnny? Water trucks finally arrive and there is a stampede for the showers.
