Split episode

Warning: Spoilers
One part of this episode centers on practical jokes. It's partly out of the need for distractions but sometimes it takes on new heights. This one has Charles becoming more accepted by the camp than Frank ever could under similar circumstances. BJ is outsmarting Hawkeye and Charles until Hawkeye gets a clue then teams up with Charles to even the score. This is something that could never happen with Frank Burns around.

The second plot is more serious and centers on another visiting friend of Margaret's. This time it's Margaret helping her friend and with help from Potter and Klinger are able to help her friend face a problem that has long plagued her. Margaret also points out the double standard on drinking between men and women. She also manages to balance being head nurse and good friend.

Multi-dimensional

Here BJ's reputation as a prankster grows big time which culminates in the later episode "The Joker is Wild". We also see more bonding between Hawkeye and Winchester as they find themselves the unwitting victims of pranks which aren't exactly popular amongst the 4077th. This was directed by Alan Alda. The episode also deals with alcoholism, and double-standards amongst male and females.

Practical Jokes and Alcoholism
Hitchcoc25 April 2015
This episode starts out with a ridiculous scene in the OR. Charles goes to operate on a soldier whom he thinks has a thoracic injury, when Hawkeye comes up behind him and cuts the chords to his pants, leaving him naked from the waist down. The reaction is decidedly against the practical joker and Pierce must now endure disdain from the troops. While this is happening, a good friend of Margaret's, who has serious responsibilities, begins to drink heavily. She carelessly grabs a bottle of the wrong blood type and if Klinger isn't there, she could have killed the patient. This brings about the oldest thing in the world--do you tell on your friends. Apparently this woman has a history of boozing, but assured Margaret she had licked the problem. While she is hiding her problem, Hawkeye is trying to even the score, hoping to be victimized by Winchester. But there is a fly in the ointment. Well done treatment of body detox.

This episode is kind of insane

Hawkeye acts much like how he acts every single episode but for some reason this time everyone is very hostile to him.
