Unscheduled Day Out at M*A*S*H 4077
woodway7727 September 2006
A very funny episode where the staff gravitate to Rosie's, starting with Hawkeye looking for breakfast. He's soon joined by an AWOL sergeant and eventually nearly everyone ends up there. Several sub-plots make this episode worth paying attention to - Idignant "Chaaals" looking for Hawkeye to relieve him as Officer of the Day, Klinger getting into the back-room craps game (with a hilarious set of dealers, played by Keye Luke and Richard Lee-Sung), a lost (and coma-drunk) Army officer no one knows the identity of, and the creation of "Rosieland", the new sovereign nation from which they are never leaving. A great vision of an overworked, stressed-out group of people letting off some steam and finding a few hours of normality in an insane place.

It's the respect

Warning: Spoilers
The more I watch this episode, the more I recognise that respect for Colonel Potter is what underpins the 4077th. The scene towards the end where Potter reminds Hawkeye and BJ that he's earned respect really gets to the heart of the episode.

This is the first appearance of Jerry Scully (Joshua Bryant). He makes two more appearances in the next season.

They Complain a Lot but Seem to Find Lots of Fun
Hitchcoc13 April 2015
A soldier named Scully leaves his unit after a battle, goes AWOL, and goes into Rosie's Bar, where Pierce is having breakfast (corn flakes and beer). They decide that they have had enough of war and will not return. As the episode goes on, more and more people show up, Klinger comes to get into a floating crap game run by a couple of cheats. Of course, everything gets out of hand as most of Potter's people are leaving camp. Charles comes in and they tie him up. There is also a major who is passed out and nobody knows who he is. Scully takes a shine to Margaret, but she doesn't know his situation. When the MP's show up, things take a hard turn. Sometimes the show stretches the limits of reality. This is one of them. A few surprises but nothing spectacular.

As Good As MASH Gets
craigbenting20 April 2022
I've been watching MASH episodes since I was a little kid laying down on the carpet in front of the TV late at night, close to bed time. This episode is as good as MASH gets, which is a 10 out of 10.

The MASH crew just revolts and declares Rosie's Bar is a sovereign nation. Names and flags must be chosen, and Canada is decidedly not an option. But olive drab green Army underwear works as the national flag, not so surprisingly.

Corrupt craps games and attempted rescues commence, but nothing can stop Rosieland. Except Colonel Potter's logic and the dawn of the next day.

This episode represents what everyone who has ever served in the US Army a little too long wishes to happen from time to time. At least every weekend. Honestly, the attitude captured in this episode is a perfect representation of every "pass" that everyone who has ever served as a grunt in the US Army has ever earned. Pure chaos is always the perfect antidote for the pure organized boredom and horror that is the US Army in wartime.
