- The town school teacher decides to leave town abruptly and get married. The only temporary candidate seems to be Lily Merrill and a town delegation made up of all the mothers won't hear of it.
- The Laramie school teacher Trilby Johnson is leaving on the stage to marry and Mavis Martingale wants Troop to stop her. When Troop refuses, Mavis drops the job of finding a substitute on him. His first thought is Al Skinner who has a college degree but is a drunk. None of the mothers are thought to have enough of an education to take over in discussion with Lily. She volunteers to substitute. They scoff at the idea due to her job/background but when she is the only one who can spell seismography they concede the job to her. Homer Martingale, Mavis' husband, hears about the plan and says the women will never allow it. He brings a picture of Mavis in her Pony Dancer outfit. Troop asks Lily about using it to pressure the women to back down but Lily kills the idea. Troop arrests Skinner to sober him up. The next morning both Lily and Skinner show up to teach and Mavis brings the kids. She thanks Lily for killing the idea of showing her picture and is suddenly very pleasant. Mr. Skinner takes over as a natural. He majored in history.—Anonymous
