A powerful loss
TheLittleSongbird19 November 2020
Alex Cabot to me was a great character. It may have taken a while to get used to her iciness, but she had a lot of presence in the courtroom and when she was talking about prime suspects with the detectives or in chambers. Mostly too she was by the book while making some clever manoueveurs (like in her extradition persuasion scene in "Manhunt"), with a couple of exceptions (i.e. "Guilt"). Stephanie March did play her wonderfully and it was sad to bid farewell to her.

What an amazing episode "Loss" was. It was easily the first outstanding episode of Season 5 and not just a strong contender for the best episode of Season 5, but also one of the best of the whole show. And there have been some brilliant ones before and since. Cabot's last appearance couldn't have been handled any better, one of the best of the whole 'Law and Order' franchise in my view, and "Loss" is one of the most tense and most poignant episodes of 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit'.

"Loss" is well made visually. The photography is slick and subtly gritty as usual and while the locations are limited in number they are still pleasing to look at and the more intimate ones aren't claustrophobic. The music is haunting while not going over the top and not being intrusive, too constant and melodramatic music would have ruined the mood and would not have let the dialogue do the talking as effectively.

The script is also beautifully balanced, intelligently written and provokes a lot of thought. The intrigue, tension and emotion are balanced so well together and are hugely effective individually too. The story is hugely absorbing and taut, with some of the things that happen not what one expects. Including an explosion that had me on the edge of the seat hands clapped over my mouth. The standout scene, and what makes "Loss" such a special episode, is the ending, one of not many endings of 'Special Victims Unit' to have me uncontrollably sobbing. Such a poignantly written scene with sincerely understated acting.

March is absolutely brilliant here and to me she was never better. She has the authority but she also shows how good she is at displaying so much emotion in more than just the line delivery. The other regular standout was Mariska Hargitay, the chemistry between her and March was heart-wrenching and what wrenched my heart just as much was seeing Olivia as upset as she was. David Thornton is wonderfully smarmy, while Jacinto Taras Riddick is terrifying as Zapata. Not many episodes at this stage of 'Special Victims Unit' had intimidation tactics that had me cowering to the same extent as here.

Overall, just outstanding and very special. 10/10

One of the best SVUs ever

Warning: Spoilers
This was without a doubt (at least in my opinion) one of the best SVU episodes ever. The only one that comes close is "Manhunt." When an Hispanic woman dressed only in a fur coat is found murdered in an alley, Benson and Stabler are dispatched to the scene. Through the course of their investigation, they are caught up in much more than a hooker murder. A murdered cop, a top secret and dangerous DEA investigation, and a lethal drug cartel make this a nail biting episode. Sad ending as one of the regular cast members comes to a fatal demise. I won't give away the twist, but make sure you watch to the very end. If you're an SVU fan, it will leave you with tears in your eyes and a smile on your face.

I have watched this one at least 4-5 times and will watch at least a few more times. This is peak SVU to me. A lot of times, the show has this forgivable 'cheese' that is part of its charm. Not here. This plays out like a movie. It's a season finale 17 episodes too early.

Must watch! 10/10.

A Hair Trigger Temper
bkoganbing26 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This episode belongs to Stephanie March who exits the show as ADA Alexandra Cabot. Drug dealer Jacinto Taras Riddick takes a personal interest in her and not a good one.

Riddick is no street level dealer he's at the top of the narcotics food chain, an underboss to a Colombian drug lord who has some really good connections and is wired into a lot of places.

The SVU squad gets the case of a girl found only in a coat with her tongue cut out. Turns out she was an undercover cop and that sends the squad on a collision course with the Drug Enforcement Agency and a long term investigation they have on Riddick and his crew.

Riddick has a hair trigger temper and it's what got the undercover killed and Alexandra Cabot sets him off the same way.

David Thornton is around as all around smarmy criminal lawyer Lionel Granger who of course is defending Riddick.

Stephanie March really has the right stuff for her job.

So Long Alex

Warning: Spoilers
Like one reviewer says that in trying to get used to her as it really took a long time as well for yours truly.

SVU and DA's office must face off against the DEA and in the drug cartel with the DEA agent who was a handler for an undercover slain agent there. Feels guilty in not pulling her out, leading to his testimony possibly.

Later on as the feds want to step on in there. Still they SVU and DA will not go down without a fight there. But still Cabot in having her life and family's lives threatened has to reconsider.

Good bye Alex.
