The Baxter's Defense Attorney Morris Hoffman mentions Kim Basinger in reference to an oral contract. In 1991, Basinger had an oral contract to star in the movie Boxing Helena (1993), but she backed out. In 1993, the president of the studio sued her, and the jury ordered her to pay $8.9 million (later reduced to $3.8 million).
During a brief discussion about the length of the adoption process, Ben Stone reveals Adam Schiff has a son named Josh.
This episode appears to be based on two separate cases/incidents:
- The Angela Andrews/Terry Pounds case.
- The "Baby M" case.
When E.A.D.A. Ben Stone is walking with A.D.A. Claire Kincaid, he stops at an outdoor newsstand to buy the December 2, 1993, issue of the semi-monthly "The New York Review of Books". If that periodical was first on sale about 2 weeks before its cover date, Stone could have bought it during the last half of November. With "Breeder" shown on January 19, 1994, at least that scene was shot about 2 months or less before it was first broadcast.
Marcella Lowery has portrayed four different characters over the course of the series:
- Episode 1.21 Sonata for Solo Organ (1991) - Nurse.
- Episode 4.13 Breeder (1994) - Sheridan.
- Episode 5.6 Competence (1994) - Van Buren's Attorney.
- Episode 13.22 Sheltered (2003) - Lois Barker.
