The depiction of the Hutterites in this episode is historically accurate. In the late 1870's (just prior to the time depicted in the series), nearly twenty thousand Hutterites (established in the early 1500's by Jakob Hutter) emigrated to America to escape forced military conscription (the Hutterites are extreme pacifists, as shown in the episode). Many of them settled with Mennonites and Amish (who are similar in their views) in Ohio, but were forced out due to a bitter disagreement with these other two groups. These events are referenced in a passing mention of "leaving Ohio."
Stuntman Jock Mahoney, playing the role of Davidson, suffered a stroke during production.
