We begin with Caine being arrested and charged with a phony crime by corrupt officials who need recruits to do their mining for them. Roy Jenson, who played Caine's barroom opponent in the original pilot, here plays the leader of the inmates, all impressed by Caine's perseverance, but still fearful because the mine uncovers an ancient Indian burial ground. Superstition enters when Hannibal (Mike Mazurki) becomes the first to dig up a fossil, and quickly dies soon afterwards due to an accidental cave-in. The warden (Ford Rainey) and his confederate, Ward Bannack (Fred Sadoff), try to kill Caine by orchestrating another cave-in, leaving Bannack and several others trapped underground with enough air for only a few short hours. Keye Luke's Master Po discusses superstition with student Caine (Radames Pera), preparing him to walk across a pit of acid or die trying. Woodrow Parfrey and Don Dubbins are other prisoners who learn to follow Caine's example.
