- Master Kan: A man truly himself will not enrich his own interests and make a virtue of poverty. He goes his way without depending on others yet is not arrogant that he needs no one. The greatest man is nobody.
- Dora Burkham: Jenny, I don't understand what's gotten into you. Haven't I always been good to you? Haven't I always given you things?
- Jenny: Thing? Things you didn't want no mo'!
- Dora Burkham: But Jenny, we played together when we were babies.
- Jenny: When I was five years old, they put me up on a box so I could iron your birthday dress.
- Dora Burkham: Why, I always remembered you on your birthday. I always made sure you had your own cake.
- Jenny: I eat it out back after I was through cleanin' the kitchen. You got to go ta school an' learn. Did I? When you were sick and ailin' the ol' doctor came. Who came when I was sick. Did I sew your dress or was you sewin' mine? Did I draw your bath water or was it th' other way around?
- Kwai Chang Caine: [Puts teapot down and walks away]
- Master Kan: Young Caine. Do I see the scar of anger on your face?
- Kwai Chang Caine: I do not like to be a servant.
- Master Kan: Oh... You consider it beneath you to serve another.
- Kwai Chang Caine: How am I to answer? I do not know what it is to be served.
- Master Kan: Do not the ancients say: "Rank and reward have no appeal for a man one with himself"?
- Kwai Chang Caine: Yet you, Master, are served and therefore greater.
- Master Kan: [Shakes his head] Smaller. I have taken without true respect what you have given. We must both learn.
- [Stands up and points to his seat]
- Master Kan: Please, sit here.
- Kwai Chang Caine: [Sits down] It does not seem right.
- Master Kan: It is my joy, Master.
- [Smiles and bows]
