While Harm and Mac stand on a pier and speak with one of the officers from the targeted ship, the hull number on the bow of the ship alongside the pier, supposedly USS Vance (with that name on the canvas on the brow), identifies her as USS Chara (AE-31), an ammunition ship, commissioned in 1944 and decommissioned in 1972.
The fictional ship targeted by the terrorists is USS Vance (DDG-101), a destroyer. The real USS Vance was DE-387, a destroyer escort of the Edsall class, commissioned in 1943 and decommissioned in 1969. The real DDG-101 is USS Gridley, a guided-missile destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class, commissioned in 2007 and still in service, named for Capt. Charles Gridley, the Commanding Officer of USS Olympia (C-6), to whom Commodore George Dewey, aboard his flagship in 1898, said the famous words, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley", thus starting the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. [The slogan of USS Gridley is "Ignis Ubi Paratus" ("Fire when Ready").]
