This above-average episode from 22 years ago gives voice to the problems faced by many ex-military veterans who, after joining up at a young age and serving with distinction for many years, are (fairly-) suddenly discharged and left to "fend for themselves" on the streets. We had a similar problem in the UK at the time that this episode was broadcast in 1997, leading eventually to the formation of the "Help for Heroes" charity in 2007.
Bruce Weitz (the former Sgt "Renko" from Hill Street Blues") gives good expression to the character of a former Vietnam PoW and veteran who has become "lost in the system". The reason why he spends his time watching the convenience store where the initial incident occurs becomes clear. Bud and Harm perform well both at the start and throughout the case.
This episode holds true to the Bellisarius policy of supporting the US military, both past and present. It is well-worth watching as you get to the mid-point of Season two. By this point, Catherine Bell had settled into the role of "Mac" and the characters were beginning to spark off each other. Of course, a happy ending is contrived leaving everyone with a positive glow and a hopeful outlook for the future.
