Both Colin Dexter and Julian Mitchell are seen, deep in discussion with a third man, sitting at a table behind John Thaw and Kevin Whately in the bar of the Randolph Hotel. The bar was later known as "The Morse Bar".
Colin Dexter based his full-length novel "The Jewel That Was Ours" on his storyline and Julian Mitchell's screenplay for this episode. Published in 1991, it was the ninth Morse book.
The lobby of The Randolph hotel is not the real lobby. The "lobby" is the entrance way and ground floor of Highclere Castle, as seen in Downton Abbey.
The lute song played at dinner is John Dowland's 'Flow, My Tears' from 1596.
