One thing....about my favorite episode
larry.launders13 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I thoroughly love this episode.

I liked the opening, the gig he goes to (not to mention the music) and how the 'medical emergency' develops.

I have a hard time imagining anyone but Harry Lennix doing the role of John Henry Giles.

But enough of the fawning - I thought the episode did a lot to help explain House himself a good bit; or at the least, put a description into a high impact statement.

And yes, it all tends to generate around a popular quote by John Henry's character: "I know that limp. I know the empty ring finger. And that obsessive nature of yours, that's a big secret. You don't risk jail and your career to save somebody doesn't want to be saved unless you got something, anything... one thing. The reason normal people got wives and kids and hobbies, whatever, that's because they ain't got that one thing that, that hits them that hard and that true. I got music. You got this. The thing you think about all the time. Thing that keeps you south of normal. Yeah, makes us great. Makes us the best. All we miss out on is everything else. No woman waiting at home after work with a drink and a kiss; that ain't gonna happen for us."

And for the cherry on top, the handling of John Henry's other doctor by House is very worth seeing.

All the way to the final scene - the last exchange between John Henry and House, and the incredibly appropriate music chosen to lead the show out.

Great episode.

Finding it's stride

If you're looking for the point this show kicked on in front of the other medical dramas of the time this episode is the jumping off point when the cast , crew and writers hit their stride The first time "teardrop" is used in the intro and one of the best cameos in the whole run.

I checked him out, he's a great doctor, you think he's better then I am.

Leave it to House to ignore a DNR to save a patients life. It is just what you would expect.

Harry Lennix (Ray, The Matrix Reloaded) guest stars as a famous jazz musician who just wants to die because he can't play anymore. He comes up against House who can't do anything but treat his patients. The question becomes who's will is stronger.

House ends up in court, but manages to solve the case in his usual fashion while he fights to keep Foreman from running off with a slick talking doctor from L.A.

Also features Brandy.

Taking things in hand

Warning: Spoilers
Two things stand out in my mind regarding this episode: House finally taking matters into his own hands to save a stricken musician's life (see exactly what happens for yourself). And House and the musician together at the end, trading jibes in a heartwarming and very funny manner (again, see exactly what happens for yourself). The clinic stuff is pretty outrageous, including a diabetic in denial whom House dresses down so viciously I wouldn't have been at all amazed if the guy had filed a lawsuit. "DNR" also is one of those rare episodes where House learns a thing or two about human relationships the hard way, thanks to the patient.

Impenetrable shield meets the all piercing spear.
GraXXoR3 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Egos abound in this episode that sheds light on more of House's obsession with doing his job, whatever the cost... to himself or to others. "It's what pushes medicine forward..." I found the musician's doctor to be rather flat and clichéd. The typical "young, successful type" guaranteed to make the sort of people rooting for House annoyed. Besides that rather uncharacteristically poorly written role, the story was another excellent outing for one of the most curmudgeonly, ungracious heroes on TV.

Bleeding Gums Murphy
holy_big_sandwich24 January 2023
If you want an episode about a sick musician losing his gift for music then succumbing to a silent poignant death, go watch the simpson's episode about Bleeding Gums Murphy.

Anyway this episode is more about the ethical dilemma of Do Not Resuscitate bracelets. House, the ever obsessed diagnostician he is, can't let a little legal issue get in his way, so he saves a man who just wants to die (you'll see this multiple times through out the series).

I can't even remember what he had, and I don't really care.

Next episode please.

House Quote: "DNR means "do not resuscitate", not "do not treat".
