Allyn Ann McLerie
rms125a6 April 2015
I could not believe that Pearl Danko, the long presumed deceased ex-wife of Max, was played by the incredible Allyn Ann McLerie. McLerie, an actress, dancer and singer in film, stage and television since the 1940s, was born in Quebec to Anglophone parents but raised in Brooklyn. She played elegant, beautiful, well-spoken, complicated but comprehensible women. However, as Pearl Danko, she was unrecognizable here. (I had to check the credits to see who was playing the role.) I fairly quickly recognized Dana Wynter despite missing the opening credits. But McLerie, her beauty obscured through masterful makeup and her apparently long-ago discarded Brooklyn accent restored pitch perfect, was masterful.

That fish has guts

Warning: Spoilers
A fairly innocuous opening, with Max doing a non-verbal Gorton's fisherman impression, missing the arrival of his ex-wife...and the murder that she's apparently connected to. This script would need altering today, as this episode takes you back to the day of luggage being checked out. That aside, the intrigue is maintained for quite awhile, as Max rekindles his relationship with his ex-wire after he realizes she's alive. We hear and see the good and the bad between them that explains why they split. Meanwhile, a couple of plays on her name, Pearl, "I hope it's not Pearl Harbor" and "I think it's time we stopped letting Pearl string us along" and a nice diversion to what looked like Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach). A brief, dual scuffle towards the end, and all ends well...and that's no fish story!

Wardrobe! Someone's asleep at the switch.

Blooper alert: In the opening sequence, J & J walk down the stairs in their pajamas. But in the kitchen, suddenly Jonathan is wearing a bathrobe.

Nevertheless, they get points for Jonathan's designer jeans in the last scene.

Max's ex-wife and stolen diamonds
coltras3517 September 2023
Max's ex-wife, presumed dead for over 10 years, arrives in Los Angeles. Her friend is murdered, so she calls Max for help. When two thugs try to grab her at the park, she is injured and Max is kidnapped. Demands are made for a necklace about which the Hart's know nothing. They desperately hunt for it to no avail, and they plan to give an identically made one ...

We get to know a little about Max's past. His wife comes to visit - the wife he thought was dead. Allyn Ann Maclerie plays the wife, and does a good job. She's a sweet character but brings a lot of trouble. As for Max, he remains unruffled even when he learnt that she faked her death. He just glad to see her back. Dana Wynter heads the villainy, looking for diamonds that Max's ex has. It's steady and entertaining enough.
