Granted, Don Adams' Bogart impression isn't the best in the world, but it is funny. The excuse for it is once again CONTROL is experiencing budget cutbacks and everyone is put on half pay, only working 8-12. Max decides to make money working as a private eye with 99 as his secretary. Naturally, he assumes the Bogart voice when a femme fatale with a jealous husband (Lynn Gordon, Miss Arizona of 1957!) comes to him for help. That case ends badly, but the Bogart characterization comes in handy when Max is hired by Mr. Peter (Berry Kroeger) and Mr. Sydney (Philip Roth, repeating his Peter Lorre impression from "School Days") to protect Trinka (Roxanne Berard in her last professional appearance). Fortunately that also happens to be Max's current assignment at CONTROL. Unfortunately these Greenstreet and Lorre impersonators are really KAOS agents out to kill Miss Trinka. To complete the "Maltese Falcon" parody (though there isn't a black bird in this one) Buddy Hackett appears as the duo's gunsel, Wilber. There's some funny stuff in this such as the opening chase scene where Max shares a cab with future "WKRP" star Gordon Jump, the big shoot out at the hotel, and the "Closet of Silence" (the Cone has been leased out to the CIA). But the really fun part is the loving tribute to the Bogart detective films.
