Introducing Mom
Tweekums25 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After experiencing a commercial while he dreamt Fry has an urge to buy 'Lightspeed Briefs'; the underwear of the future but sadly for him he is a little short on cash. It looks like he is going to end up with even less when he has to chip in to pay Bender's bail after he was arrested for shoplifting but then Fry remembered his old bank account. It only had 93ȼ in it when he was frozen in 1999 but due to the wonders of compound interest he now has $4.3 billion dollars! He quickly sets about buying various Twentieth Century items so he can live his old life again. One of the items he wants most is the last can of anchovies. Somebody else wants them too; Mom, the lovable CEO of Mom's Old-Fashioned Robot Oil. She isn't quite as lovable as she seems and wants them because they could be used to create a cheaper robot oil that would put her out of business. In order to get the anchovies off Fry she sets about bankrupting him but even when he is left with nothing he refuses to sell... he is going to share them with his friends.

This was a decent episode that introduced some great new characters; the foulmouthed Mom and her three dim-witted sons Walt, Larry and Igner. While he only had a small part Zoidberg was hilarious in this episode; showing that he can get very angry when he can't have what he wants. The episode also featured a guest appearance from Pamela Anderson who played her own preserved head is a slightly self-mocking scene where she is helping Mom's son's persuade Fry in is back in the 20th Century to get his PIN. Overall it was enjoyable even though I tend to prefer more 'futuristic' episodes to those that dwell on the 20th Century.

I love the whole conflict with the Mom character trying to get those anchovies back.

Crazy he'd prefer to eat them over having millions of dollars of his accidental fortune back.

I love seeing Mom be upset over that.

One of the most rewatchable episodes
reidyq22 December 2021
(Ranking every episode of Futurama #6) This episode is great, it isn't one of my favorite episodes, I think there are a lot that are better, but I can re-watch this one 15 times and still laugh at the many hilarious jokes. This episode introduces one of the best characters, Mom. She is the closest thing to a villain in this series, like Mr. Burns in The Simpsons. This episodes plot is really creative and whoever thought of this probably sounded crazy when they were discussing episodes. Just imagine somebody a group of people and one person says this "We should make an episode where the main character really likes anchovies but they are extinct in the future so he has to buy the last packet of them." I would laugh if I heard that in a pitch meeting. Overall, this is a great, rewatchable episode.

The One With The Anchovies...

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It's so funny. I just really think it's a great episode.

In this episode, Fry is inspired to go shopping by dream advertisements, but he doesn't have any money. After visiting the bank, he finds out that he actually 4.3 billion dollars. He goes on a shopping spree, buying a lot of stuff that reminds him of his home-time, the 1990s. He discovers that he can't order a pizza with his favorite topping, anchovies, because they have become extinct. He goes to an auction and bids for the last can of anchovies. Mom, who owns the robot company, also wants the anchovies. She believes that Fry wants them to make cheaper robot oil, but he just wants his favorite topping. Eventually, Mom figures out a way to rob him. We also find out why anchovies went extinct. Zoidberg's race ate them all, Zoidberg even eats that last tin.

Fun Fact: 4.3 billion dollars may seem like a way too much amount for Fry to have in his bank account, but starting with 93 cents, compound interest of 2.25% over one thousand years, the amount comes to exactly, $4,283,508,499.71.

Fun Fact: First appearance of Scruffy the janitor, even though his name is not mentioned.

Fun Fact: First appearance of Mom.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Predictable with wasted opportunities

Warning: Spoilers
I tend to like most Futurama episodes but they could've done a much better plot for such a unique situation. Having Fry lose his fortune over a can of anchovies is just silly.
