Best Netflix Binge

It took me a couple episodes to realize this show wasn't going to have the same 'feel good sappy happy' episodes as most other American television shows. It's a show about teenagers in the 80s but it's also a show about teenagers all the time. Watching this show was like reading Catcher in the Rye or maybe even a John Steinbeck book - it's about how teenagers are and moments in life we all go through or have struggled with. The writing is incredible, the actors are superb, and it's as genuine and quality as it gets for television. It's one the most truthful representation of "the best years of your life." I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this series. I miss it and I've only now seen the series once through.

Another excellent episode

Another excellent episode of Freaks & Geeks that is better and cuter than I remembered.

The Freaks storyline was fun. In this episode the whole gang was trying to get into a party where they had to get fake ID's made for. I never really liked Jeff because of his uber lameness and once he again he proved it. He turned out to be at the party, part of the band. He caught the Freaks with beer and thanks to him they couldn't drink. I loved Kim's reaction.

The geek's part of the story was far cuter, a new girl Maureen that ends up hanging out with them. She's funny and not judgmental. Unfortunately for the geeks, the popular kids also like her so the geeks must fight to get her to stay with them. They take her out to an all-you-can-eat buffet. But eventually she starts hanging out with the popular kids, and that breaks their hearts.

My favorite part of the episode is probably Eli. they should have made him a regular because he's just so cute and funny.

FOUR stars for this one. This show is just charming as hell.

New kid in town

People like Maureen don't come along every day (never). Pretty, down- to-earth and willing to hang with the geeks. Suddenly, Sam, Neil and Bill have an air of legitimacy in the halls of McKinley, and just as sudden is the profound need to hold onto something precious before the cool kids get ahold of her.

It's that sincerity that lends 'Carded and Discarded' its lasting sweetness, but this also has plenty of understated humor. Not to mention the excellent guest cast and customarily superb soundtrack. This is up there with the best of 'em.

Another stellar effort, written by Feig and directed by Apatow

Warning: Spoilers
Do I get any "credibility pts." for actually watching it WHEN IT WAS ON NBC?

My buddy had tipped me off to it as a realistic high school show set in our era (late 70's - early 80's) to check out, unlike that "Dawson emo crap" (his words, not mine) which was then all the rage. I got hooked right away, and even had to finish it up when the remaining episodes were dumped to the FOX Family Channel (yup, that's what it was then called) the next summer.

Anyway, I think the first episode I saw was when the geeks tried to make friends with the hot new girl (played by Kayla Ewell) by inviting her to an after-school rocket launching, while the freaks got fake ID's made through a guy they knew (played by Jason Schwartzman). He hooked them up with a scary fake ID maker (Kevin Corrigan). It was great dark comedy all around. And Schwartzman's mall store manager was played in an uncredited role by a smarmy Joel Hodgson, who I hadn't seen anywhere since he bolted MST3K. I won't give away the twist ending when the freaks finally get to try out their fake ID's.

What a great episode, and there were many others just as good, with a music budget for original-version licensed songs far superior than anything else going back then.

Carded and Discarded (#1.7)

Warning: Spoilers
The Freaks work on getting fake IDs to go watch a band play. Geeks become friends with a new girl who is way out of their league and are worried to lose her.

A fun episode. I really hope Maureen stays friends with them. She seems like a really cool character and also nice enough to not simply forget the geeks she has had so much fun with.

All the ways of trying to get the IDs were also shown in a fun way. And the ending with their councilor being part of the band they were seeing and keeping them from drinking at the show was also fun.
