John Lithgow, who provides a voice cameo for this episode, was the producers' first choice to play Frasier Crane when the character debuted in Cheers (1982). Lithgow declined the role because of a time conflict.
Kari's repeated claim to Frasier that "I'm your number-one fan" is the same line used by Annie Wilkes, the antagonist in the eerie 1990 thriller, "Misery."
The actress playing Kari on the phone with Frasier is not the same one who shows up at the awards benefit. Renee Lippin has a distinct lisp, but the phone Kari has precise diction.
When Roz tells Frasier they've been nominated for a SeaBea, he gleefully spouts, "They like me! They really like me!" This is a nod to actress Sally Field's Oscar acceptance speech in 1985 (for "Places in the Heart") in which she said, "I can't deny the fact that you like me! Right now, you like me!" (N.B. Many--including Frasier--think she said "You like me! You really like me!", but that's inaccurate.)
The celebrity caller in this episode is John Lithgow. Lithgow plays Madman Martinez who pretends to be depressed, as a means of plugging his car dealership.
