Martin mentions Dempsey and Tunney, whom Niles recognized, replying "I think I know a thing or two about vaudeville". Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney were two heavyweight boxers, most famous for their fight on September 22, 1927 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Dubbed as "The Long Count," Dempsey knocked Tunney down in the seventh round, but the count was delayed due to Dempsey's failure to go to the neutral corner. Tunney ended up winning the fight, and whether or not the "long count" affected the outcome remains a subject of debate.
