Near Great Episode...
IdaSlapter27 July 2021
This episode is a near-classic gem. I'm deducting 2 stars only because it's pretty obvious that the noses are fake in the first shots when the parents arrive at Frasier's. The jokes are incredibly witty as always, but the pace of is a little under-par. Not that I (and a team of writers) could ever do any better though.

Other than that it's near perfection.

I have to disagree however with 'eburg84's suggestion that the actors are trying unsuccessfully to suppress their laughter, like Harvey Korman did on the Carol Burnett show. In this episode, that inability to contain their laughter is clearly scripted in as part of the story, as it only happens because they're trying not to laugh in front of the grandparents.

As for the two reviewers who gave it low marks because Frasier and family are 'making fun of or picking on 'very nice people' because of their appearance, apparently they've never judged ANYONE based on their looks. Right.

And they completely miss the point of the episode, which is the lesson Roz learns at the end -- that we all have these "problems" and everyone goes through some teasing. But these things don't matter -- the important thing is making sure you're there as a supporting and understanding parent.

Roz and the Schnoz

This is one of my most favorite episodes of the series. Peri Gilpin also lists it as one of her favorites. The camera angles are brilliant, the storyline humorous, but not offensive, and the laughter of the actors is genuine. I've seen the episode dozens of times and still laugh out loud each time! In this episode, the parents of the young man who got Roz pregnant, wish to meet her to offer their support. Roz is staying at Frasier's while her apartment is being painted. When the grandparents-to-be arrive, the Frasier clan are confronted with a humorous aspect which their visitors possess. It is great fun to watch the actors attempt to suppress their own laughter throughout the episode. It reminds me of Harvey Korman attempting not to laugh during scenes of the Carol Burnett show.

The Nose Knows

I watched this in a quiet place using the subtitles. I started to laugh but had to suppress it. I almost internally combusted. I know the noses on these people were incredible and it was a cheap form of humor, but the lines were precious and the characters seemed to be having so much fun. The bit with Daphne at the conclusion was so touching.

Cheap, tacky, borderline offensive

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the few Frasier episodes that I really can't stand. The way the regular characters react to the Garrett's appearance is downright cruel. I can just about picture it from down-to-earth cop Martin, but the other characters are usually much more sympathetic. The attempt at a touching ending falls flat. The whole thing is more typical of Everybody Loves Raymond or something equally gutter-bound.

The dialogue twists are a little unbelievable as well - of all the dog breeds in the world, a Schnauzer? Are the Garretts really oblivious to their appearance? The side-story about the earrings is pretty forgettable as well. By season 5 the show was slightly losing its edge, never more exemplified than by this. Jeffrey Richman wrote a lot of so-so episodes.

Making fun of people's physical appearance is not funny

I love Frasier but rank this episode as amongst the weakest

It makes fun of a couple of very nice people because of their appearance. Laughing and picking on people for their physical appearance is something done by school yard bullies.

Hated this episode

Cheap, unsensitive and so stupid! They are not even relatives, not brother and sister, why would a couple have similar noses? And I agree that it's out of character for everyone except maybe Martin Crane and Roz to laugh at such jokes. I wasn't expecting a kindergarten level humor from Frasier.
