Solid Episode
cwstone29 August 2022
Frasier was well into hitting its stride by season 4. We're starting to see our characters developing in a meaningful way. Mixed Doubles isn't the best episode out there but it's certainly an important one. It's essentially the first episode to seriously address the plausibility of a future Niles / Daphne romance.

It's a good episode with some solid laughs. I particularly like the scene when Frasier and Niles see Daphne's unfaithful boyfriend at Cafe Nervosa. Frasier's very unique objection to Niles fighting the guy is hilarious.

I've noticed some people find the ending of this episode depressing / sad. I respectfully disagree. It's bittersweet to be sure. But I personally found the ending to be more poignant than anything. There's a cautious optimism to it that I found very satisfying.

Sort of Sad
Hitchcoc5 October 2019
Joe and Daphne break up. She is on the rebound and finds a guy is a carbon copy of Niles. This leads to some real tension and sadness for Niles because Frasier talks him out of putting moves on Daphne. All this leads to a rather sad conclusion. But there seems to be some hope because it is becoming clear that they really love one another.

Double Your Fun

Warning: Spoilers
This is an exemplary episode. Everything meshes: engaging storyline; additional development of the Ros/Niles relationship; and a foreshadowing of the relational change between Daphne and Niles.

But, what puts this episode over the top is when Daphne brings home her date, Rodney (Kevin Ferrell), and introduces him to the Cranes. They are stunned, because he is a mirror copy of Niles.

At one point, while talking to Duke, Marty says, "I'll call you back, Duke; I'm in the Twilight Zone!".

The scene between Niles and Rodney is short, but one of the funniest scenes in a series loaded with classic bits.

The whole episode is excellent, but the Niles doppelganger scene is hysterical, ranking with "Buttons and Bows" from the "Leap of Faith" episode.

Bad endings give low reviews

Warning: Spoilers
If you are going to leave us depressed with an unhappy AND an unbelievable ending... (there never could be such a spineless move as they wrote for Niles, to be near the woman he loves and shrink back from letting her know it... unless he absolutely is out of the running and would never ever think of putting himself in the same ballpark with her.) And to not have things work out at all... this plot takes is clearly out of the realm of comedy and puts it into the mode of Soap Opera high drama, with a few funny lines thrown in. They should not have called it Frasier. They should have called it... As the Space Needle Turns.
