Here's Looking at You

Warning: Spoilers
This is another clever episode of the show. We learn more about the character of Martin, we flesh the character out a little bit more, but the character we know already (Frasier) is involved and guiding things, without it ever feeling like the show was all on his head.

Any show thinking of having a spin-off should follow the 'Frasier' example to the letter, because especially in these early episodes its doing a wonderful job.

Lots of lovely moments here, not to mention a lovely sense of heart underpinning the humour.

The fact we get a prolonged emotional scene this early that Frasier doesn't appear in only highlights what a good job the creative team did at establishing the new characters.

Good stuff.

Through the Looking Glass
Hitchcoc21 September 2019
Frasier buys a telescope to give his father a possible hobby. It is used to spy on people in their apartments. Martin makes a connection with a woman named Irene who has a similar telescope. What transpires is a back and forth as they get to know each other. Daphne is the voice of reason in the household. The conclusion is a bit lacking in finality. We'll see if this is addressed further in a future episode.

Utterly charming

This is a high point in the first season. The telescope romance is a charming concept and I adore that Irene is never seen. The whole plot of this episode is tremendously sweet and it is such a chaste, wholesome romance. That the episode also manages to be as funny as many of the purely comedic episodes is to its credit.

I doubt this was an inspiration but I wonder if Harry Stephen Keeler's Strange Romance was known to the writers. It too is centered on a romance via telescope.
