Sandy misses the swim race
wrxsti5423 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Marshall Thompson (Dr Tracy on Daktari) made a guest appearance a few episodes earlier (Day of the Shark) and also was an associate director of some of the Flipper shows and kicks this episode off as the voice on the radio announcing the loss of dangerous chemicals in the waters of Coral Key.

Meanwhile Sandy is preparing for the local high school age kids swim race by placing down race markers in the water. Sometimes you wonder how the Ricks boys would survive without Flipper. He tows the skiff to the race marker spots and can hear Bud's "hold it" call even when underwater. Also, sometimes the camera angles combined with smooth water and the time of day of the shoot combine to create simply gorgeous footage. This episode really highlights the attractiveness of the Florida Keys location. Back to the plot which revolves around lost chemical bottles that are leaking toxic chemicals.

Porter makes Sandy sit by the radio in the lead up to the race to run a routine errand but Porter finds a lady in a skiff supposedly out of gas and tows her in but her antics were just attention seeking behavior. Flipper alerts Porter to a school of dead fish and he dives to find the leaking tanks and is partially overcome. The lady helps get him to the hospital and Sandy is told by phone but feels to stay put. The race goes on despite a girl admirer pleading for the race organizers to wait for her "dream boat" (i.e. Sandy). Flipper knows the chemicals lie in the path of the racers. Bud persuades Sandy to follow Flipper who hooks the finish line marker and moves it away from the chemical leak but in so doing messes up the race. Porter gets out of hospital and races to the site. Sandy comes ashore to apologize to the race coordinator for Flipper's behavior only to be attacked verbally and physically by his rival (played by dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry) and the admiring girl. Porter arrives to tell of the averted catastrophe but not before dressing down the boys for deserting their post. I have to say that for Sandy to initially choose to stay by the phone after hearing the news that his dad was OK in hospital rather than swim the race shows real discipline. A 15 year old today would head for the race!

Funny scene of the episode - Bud not wanting to eat Sandy's burnt corned beef hash that even Pete the Pelican rejects! Also a rare episode with a ton of adult extras being the parents of the racers.

One of the best Season 1 episodes

Warning: Spoilers
I think "Teamwork" is one of the best Flipper Season 1 episodes.

In this one, Porter gets called out by Warden Dennis (Dan Chandler) just as Sandy is serving up dinner he's cooked, rather burnt looking hash, makes you wonder if Porter arranged this knowing Sandy isn't a good cook (he needs lessons from Jamie Oliver or Delia Smith!). Through his dad being called out, Sandy ends up missing a swimming race just as some dumped canisters containing dangerous chemicals are leaking under the sea. After rescuing a lady friend Josy (wonder who played her, the actress's name does not show on the end credits), Porter investigates these chemicals and ends up in hospital after breathing in the fumes. The 2 boys disobey their dad and head out to see what is happening.

In all, an excellent episode.

A Toxic Race
mitchrmp9 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think "Teamwork" was the best title for this episode. The word is mentioned when Bud doesn't want to eat Sandy's cooking and gets a stern lecture from his father about everyone having to work together. Then at the end, it's mentioned again.

This episode is yet another case about the boys mischief and disobedience. I love the fact that they are always getting into trouble, just like normal boys. Sandy tries to stay out of trouble, but somehow Bud always talks him into breaking his father's orders. In fact, near the end of the episode, Porter makes sure the boys know that Flipper does not give the orders - DAD does. He's very angry with the boys for their actions that could have caused a life and death situation to end in death.

Flipper, of course, is able save the day by moving the finish line which I find a little hard to believe. Granted, I don't know how smart dolphins can be, but it seemed just a bit far-fetched to me...

Another great episode!

Dreamboat Sandy
wes-connors26 September 2007
Sandy (Luke Halpin) is the Ricks family's great hope to win the annual Coral Key Swim Race; teamwork is stressed as Ricks (Brian Kelly) urges Bud (Tommy Norden) to eat some awful hash his brother has prepared - but Pete the pelican won't even touch the stuff. Meanwhile, some poisonous chemicals have been dumped in the water. Ricks finds the toxic poison containers leaking - right under the Coral Key Swim Race finish line; then, Ricks is hospitalized. So… Flipper must stop the swimmers from reaching the poisonous finish line…

Note that a "Teenage Girl" (Patty Glander) doesn't want the Coral Key Swim Race to start without the participation of "Dreamboat" Sandy; perhaps, this is an acknowledgment of Luke Halpin's increasing "Teen Idol" popularity.

*** Teamwork (2/20/65) Marshall Thompson ~ Brian Kelly, Luke Halpin, Tommy Norden
