Clever, vicious and brilliant
ben-adams4 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode that showed Farscape had really grown up. It is a character study on Pilot, Aaron as a Peace Keeper and coming to terms with the decisions that the crew have made.

Aaron is shown to be a cold blooded killer who will sell out even those she loves to get her way. Pilot is given a full back story and suddenly changes from a simple deliverer of exposition to a full realised character who is also not as innocent as he would have seen.

The cast are on top form and Claudia Black and Ben Browder pull out all the stops as each has to re-evaluate their relationships.

Simply put this brings into sharp focus the different shades of grey that our "heros" are living in. They are not off on some galactic quest to save the universe, they are simply trying to get through to tomorrow and sometimes they do things that could be considered downright nasty.

A dark look in to Aeryn and Pilot's past
Tweekums2 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with Crichton and Chiana discovering a recording which shows what happened on Moya when she was under Peacekeeper control... the first thing we learn is that there was a previous Pilot who was killed by the Peacekeepers when she refused to cooperate; we see that one of her killers was Officer Aeryn Sun! Confronted with the evidence she doesn't deny what she did but explains that she had no idea that the leviathan she was on then was Moya. The others are horrified with what they learn but agree that it is essential that Pilot never learns of what happened... at least all but one of them do. When Pilot does learn he flies into a rage, attacks Aeryn and ultimately disconnects himself from Moya. In further flashbacks we learn how Pilot hadn't been allowed to bond naturally with Moya but had been bonded without her permission; a process that caused him constant pain. We also learn how Aeryn's commanding officer, and lover, Lieutenant Velorek had done something to sabotage Crais' secret project aboard Moya; leading her to betray him.

Things are pretty dark in this episode as we learn a lot more about the lives of Aeryn and Pilot before the series began; neither of them exactly comes out of it looking good. We see that Aeryn was a cold blooded killer who would betray the person closest to her for career advancement and Pilot took position on Moya when his elders had decreed that he was too young to be joined to a leviathan. These details from they past make them more interesting characters; it was particularly interesting to see Pilot, the show's most gentle character in a different light. Claudia Black gave the standout performance here as Aeryn comes to terms with the things she has done. Overall I think this was a great episode that showed just how far the series has come from the lighter episodes it started with... it certainly isn't the 'Muppets in space' series I feared it would be when I first saw it advertised!

Every character advances interestingly and all become more themselves. Excellent writing and acting.
