While the girls are off acquiring spare parts for Moya the boys visit an alien named Katoya to receive 'special training'; this will enable them to confront their pasts and, in Crichton's case, what he will face in the future. Things get off to a bad start when they learn that one of the others there is Macton Tal; the Peacekeeper whose sister Lo'Laan married D'Argo. D'Argo is convinced that Macton killed his wife because he didn't approve of their union but Macton insists that it was D'Argo who killed her in a fit of Luxan hyper-rage... if D'Argo is to succeed here he will have to control his desire to kill Macton. Crichton meanwhile finds himself locked in a small cell with a fireplace full of red hot coals; it is very hot and very humid; conditions he will have to face when he eventually confronts the Scarrans.
This is very much the boys' episode; after the opening scene with John and Aeryn the only female character we see is D'Argo's late wife who appears in frequent flashback scenes. As well as lacking the girls this episode is devoid of Farscape's trademark humour; they are there to increase their mental strength and, as is made clear early on, it won't be easy; the scenes of John trying to grab the key from the hot coals are painful to watch. The scenes between D'Argo and Macton were well handled; leaving the viewer unsure about what really happened to Lo'Laan until the end. While much of what occurred could be considered a stand alone story it is clearly setting things up for the future with John learning to cope with the conditions he will encounter when he meets the Scarrans as well as learning that the creature he encountered on Earth may have given Earth's location to Grayza... so while this isn't a classic episode it does set things up nicely for the inevitable confrontation with both Scarrans and Peacekeepers.
