Lockdown (#8.22)

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very eventful episode. At a busy day Carter looks at two kids who seem to have a small pox. So to stay safe they have to lock down the hospital and deal with the sick ones as well as the angry patients.

A pretty great idea and the season now has a cliffhanger as we are waiting to find out what exactly it is and how they will get to solve the problem.

I was pretty irritated by the people inside. Jeez, now those are some kids and not adults. Carter telling them that this was done to protect them and their families should not even have been necessary, everybody with a functional brain should grasp it.

Probably the best ER episode in the first eight seasons

Probably the best ER episode in the first eight seasons, as it featured infectious disease / a public health emergency and it showed how typical Americans behave like animals when encountering even a little fear and frustration.

Flawed premise

Warning: Spoilers
The idea that a Foreign Service couple would be completely unaware of symptoms of smallpox is almost laughable. The US State Department has a medical office that briefs all employees on disease identification. That this couple would show up at a public waiting room with both kids showing signs of some sort of pox is unrealistic. I have been to the town of Ebolowa in Cameroon and I know how seriously infectious diseases are treated.
