A means to an end

Warning: Spoilers
I just watched the follow-up episode on Pop-- in this one, Alexis goes to a fortune teller to inquire about her future with Blake. She tells the fortune teller that nothing happened with Blake at the villa. I guess the writers decided to backpedal. They also made sure nothing happened with Krystle and Nick. So while Blake and Krystle were smooching with other people in the previous installment of 'Dynasty,' they did not technically cheat.

By the way, I don't remember Alexis ever speaking to a fortune teller again. In a way, this scene (while interesting) was a bit too supernatural, even by this program's standards.

The fortune teller mentions that Alexis will be married again, probably not to Blake, and that the man will expire like death. Those are the exact words. So here we are midway through the second season, and the writers are foreshadowing Alexis' marriage to Cecil but also suggesting Cecil will not survive.

A big deal was made of Lloyd Bochner being written out a few episodes into season 3. I remember reading at the time that he wanted a pay hike and Spelling refused, so the writers killed Cecil off. But if we go by what happens in this episode way back in season 2, the writers had every intention of offing Cecil. Maybe it would not have happened so quickly, but obviously the writers did not have a long-term plan for Cecil Colby. He was a means to an end for Alexis to gain more wealth and power so she could be a serious rival to Blake in business. Then, he would no longer be needed in the series.

Incidentally, this plot has a parallel with Sammy Jo's sudden marriage to Steven in this episode. Like Alexis, Sammy Jo is going to be a threat and challenge the male-dominated authority of the Carringtons.
