the Survival episode
TheFearmakers22 July 2021
Almost every show, even the original Dallas, has a survival in the woods episode, and this is actually the first of two, ironically both involving the comic relief PC stuck out there... that is, both of them and both getting lost and almost dying, making this one better because at least it's original.

Let's go for a hike....

"Out of the Woods" is not a particularly great episode of "Doc Martin". Now, "Doc Martin" is a very good show, so even a weak show like this is still worth seeing.

It begins with Constable Mylow approaching Martin. He wants him to be his Best Man for the upcoming wedding. Not surprisingly, Martin rebuffs this out of hand--leaving Mylow to find someone else. When he does find one, he comes up with a dumb idea for a bachelor party- -to go hang out in the woods. Now I am not against camping but Mylow has no idea what he's doing and is ill-prepared and the pair get lost. Even worse, Mylow gets bitten by a poisonous snake and could die unless they get help. Unfortunately, FINDING the pair is a trial and Martin's guide is a really nutty man! Can Mylow be found in time?

The show lacks the usual structure for the series and is basically one plot instead of the usual 2 or 3. It's odd but still watchable.

Great series, stupid episode

Warning: Spoilers
Normally this show is well thought-out and written, balancing the silly stuff with some intelligent and witty stuff. In this episode, the witty stuff took a back seat and the silly stuff turned stupid. The real problem has to do with PC Mark Mylow's journey into the woods with Al Large. First, the two get lost and Mark does not want to admit it to Al. Then Mark gets bitten by a snake. Instead of realizing this could be serious, he says everything is OK and wants to continue the journey, with Al finally saying they need to return, though they are still lost. Then the stupidity continues when Doc Martin enlists the help of ranger Stewart James, who has some serious mental issues and just adds unnecessary idiocy to the situation. When Martin and Stewart arrive at the scene, they quickly separate, as Martin realizes that Stewart is just losing touch with reality. Martin then promptly gets lost while Stewart stumbles upon Al and Mark (who is by now seriously ill), but is not able to provide any assistance, due to his mental issues. Al finally convinces Stewart to look for the doctor. When Stewart finds Martin, he first wants to shoot him, thinking he is a poacher, but then gets his foot caught in a trap. Martin helps him get loose, only to get his own hand stuck in the trap. Stewart helps free Martin, only to the get his hand stuck. At this point I wanted to turn the show off. Instead of being humorous, the entire sequence of events just comes across as idiotic. The writer's should be ashamed of their writing on this one. By far the worst episode thus far into the series.

I'm sorry for rambling a bit. I just expect more from this show. I'm sure many others will disagree with me, which is OK. Still a great show, but it's a good thing this episode is the exception.

Warning: Spoilers
The usually witty humor and silliness goes fully stupid in this episode...two poison induced anaphylaxis conditions in one show lol and an animal trap 🤣 Yet somehow in the middle of the search the guy with a gun can't think of actually using it to find the lost SuperDoc...hoping this is a blip on the radar and not a sign of what's to come...

Very Weak Episode
Hitchcoc23 January 2018
I have to say that I have enjoyed all the episodes to some extent. This one is a really low point. It involves Mark, the police officer, deciding to make his stag party, a camping trip to a nearby woods. When everyone he asks (including Doc Martin) refuses to be his best man, he finally get Al Large to do it. They end up in the woods and tromp around, utterly lost. Unfortunately, Mark gets bitten by a poisonous snake and needs attention. The remainder of the episode involves the Doc locating him in the woods and trying to get some treatment for him. The whole thing is silly. It also has an element of preachiness, as the local boys are up to no good.
