a nice follow-up to the previous episode.

Don Rickles appeared in practically every sitcom in the 60s, ranging from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND to GET SMART to THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW...and also "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

In the previous episode, "4 1/2", Lyle Delp (Rickles) tries to hold up Rob and Laura in an elevator...only to have the elevator get stuck. Of course, he's caught in the end and in this follow-up, Lyle is still in prison and Rob and his co-workers and Laura all have agreed to go to that prison to entertain the inmates. The problem is that for their act, Rob and the gang wear prison uniforms and later Rob is mistaken for a real prisoner and cannot get to do the show...at least not for the prisoners who are waiting in the auditorium. Otherwise, he does put on a show for the tough prisoners and they enjoy it immensely.

This is a cute episode and a good follow-up. Well worth seeing...and quite funny.

By the way, Allan Melvin makes his appearance as a third character on the show (he plays a guard). The same is also true for Arthur Batanides, though he always played the criminal types. It's also nice to see Robert Strauss as a prisoner...he was terrific.

Not One Of The Better Dick Van Dyke Shows

Not a big fan of this episode; in fact I'm not really a fan of the shows where Rob and Laura sing and dance. To me, they look corny and dated. I know both are good dancers and singers, and these episodes are meant to display their talents, but the show was good on its own, and not really needed. And Rose Marie making hash of 'Cotton Fields' borders on bad taste. Some songs should not be made into a show tune, and I really can't stand hearing it like this.

Oh well, that's just my opinion. I'm sure others enjoy it, but if it wasn't for Don Rickles (who's not really his best either), I wouldn't watch it.
