When it is announced that former student Tommy Sherman is to return to school to have one of the new goal posts named in his honour there is a degree of excitement because he was the quarterback who helped the school win the state championship... he was also famed for the number of times he injured himself running into the goal post! He may be a school celebrity but he is also totally obnoxious and full of himself; as an example when he meets cheerleader Brittany he invites her back to his hotel room and when she points out that she has a boyfriend he assumes she is wondering if he can come along and watch! After Daria has a run in with him she and Jane muse how they couldn't be lucky enough that he'd die soon... cue off screen screams as he is killed in a freak accident involving the goal post that was due to be named in his honour. Nobody really knows how to deal with his death so they go to Daria as she is 'The Misery Chick' who must know how to deal with death. The one person not talking to her is the one person she really wants to talk to; Jane; she is feeling awkward about how they jokingly said they wanted him dead moments before the accident.
This was a good episode that dealt with a serious subject in a mature way. Tommy may have been a jerk but we weren't invited to laugh at his death; rather at how everybody thought Daria would have the answers... even members of staff. There are of course a good number of laughs amidst the drama. I had forgotten that the series featured some mildly adult material until the scene between Tommy and Brittany; it wasn't offensive but people expecting a totally innocent cartoon may be shocked!
