Let's laugh at hippies!
planktonrules6 March 2011
Jake and Helen have a couple old friends come to visit. However, it's like time stood still with these friends--and they are firmly stuck back in 1968 and are living hippie environmentalists. It's so extreme that it's very funny. Oddly, however, their son is very disconnected--choosing to live inside himself to avoid dealing with his flaky folks. It's so bad there that Daria goes to stay with Jane and spends a lot of her time hanging with Trent and his Mystik Spiral bandmate. By the time the show ends, however, definite chinks in the hippies' armor begin to show--and the Morgendorffers end up rubbing off on their old friends--turning them into middle-class capitalists.

This is a nice little send up of the 1960s-70s hippie movement--but I am sure it ruffled a few feathers! So, your perspective definitely will impact how much you enjoy it--I know I sure did.

By the way, at the flea market, get a load of the guy who sounds just like Christopher Walken--it's a hoot!!

Here come the hippies

Warning: Spoilers
When a couple of Jake and Helen's old hippy friends, the Yeagers, come to visits Daria makes her excuses and leave; Quinn almost does the same until she seems the Yeagers' son Ethan. While their guests are there the Morgendorffers try their capitalist ways; Jake starts growing a beard and Helen actually makes her own bread. As the time passes it becomes apparent that the Yeagers aren't as totally enamoured of the hippy life style as it would appear... they just don't want to admit it to each other. Quinn doesn't have her usual effect on boys on Ethan but she does learn a few interesting facts about her parents' hippy past. Meanwhile Daria is volunteered by Jane to help Trent and his band-mate Jesse sell some old records at the flea market.

This was another fun episode; the creators are certainly on a roll this season. It is always fun laughing at hippies especially when they are such caricatures; this just made them even funnier when they confess that they find many aspects of their chosen lifestyle to be a hassle. It was fun to learn a bit more about Helen's past; who'd have guessed that she'd spent a night in gaol for hitting a cop?! There are quite a few chuckles to be had over at the Lane House; it was cute seeing Daria being embarrassed when Trent saw her in a pink nighty that had belonged to her grandmother! Over all another fine episode!
