- Cliff Barnes: What about the baby?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: She had a boy.
- Cliff Barnes: I want to see my son.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Cliff... !
- Cliff Barnes: [tearing up at the sight of Sue Ellen's newborn baby] That's him? Oh, God. Is he going to live?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: They don't know.
- Cliff Barnes: Well, I know he's mine. And if he lives, he's gonna be raised a Barnes, not a Ewing. I swear that!
- J.R. Ewing: Daddy, I've always tried to please you. I've always tried to do what you've wanted me to do. I've always tried to be the man you wanted me to become. What else do you want from me?
- Jock Ewing: You've always been good at business, J.R. Now try to become a good father and husband.
- J.R. Ewing: Yes, sir, I will. I surely will.
- Cliff Barnes: Pam?
- [cheerful]
- Cliff Barnes: Hi.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [coldly] Hello, Cliff.
- Cliff Barnes: 'Hello, Cliff'? What is this? No sisterly peck, no warmth, no affection?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Look, I'm busy.
- [goes off]
- Cliff Barnes: [following] Well, I'm sorry for disturbing you, but, you know, I haven't seen you in weeks. You don't answer my telephone calls.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [outside] Can you blame me? Every time we talk, you want me to take sides in the Barnes-Ewing feud. Well, I'm through taking sides. I'm gonna live my life as I see fit.
- Cliff Barnes: I promise you, I have no schemes up my sleeve. I won't even mention the great J.R. Ewing.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: At the moment, J.R. has more than enough trouble, and I think you're the reason.
- Cliff Barnes: Wonderful. What is it?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [halts in her tracks] Wonderful? That Sue Ellen's in a sanitarium?
- Cliff Barnes: A sanitarium? Why?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Because she's a drunk, Cliff. And she's gonna kill herself and her baby if she doesn't get help. That make you happy?
- Cliff Barnes: Wait a minute. Back off! Why are you laying this guilt trip on me?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Because I think that's where it belongs.
- [shaking her head:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: She couldn't handle that affair with you.
- Cliff Barnes: I can't erase the past. Be reasonable.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No, you can't. And I don't have to be reasonable and I don't even have to like you.
- [on her way again]
- Cliff Barnes: [trailing after her] Oh, golly. Pam, you're my sister. Allow me some of my mistakes.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: If I thought it were an honest mistake. If you hadn't used Sue Ellen to get to J.R.
- Cliff Barnes: [his hand on her shoulder, he stops her] All right, all right, I have to admit that maybe it started that way, I'm gonna be honest. But then it changed into something much more.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Why didn't you go after her and tell her?
- Cliff Barnes: Because it would've meant her losing everything. Money, position, everything that goes with being Mrs. J.R. Ewing.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: What about love?
- [shaking her head:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Or didn't that mean anything?
- Cliff Barnes: Not enough.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: To whom? Sue Ellen or you?
- Cliff Barnes: That's not fair.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: 'Fair'? Oh, I know you, Cliff.
- [eyes flaring:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You were worried about the scandal and what it would do to your precious political career.
- [shaking her head:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Sue Ellen wasn't worth that.
- Cliff Barnes: Well, I've got to do something. I've got to help her.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: If you wanna help, you've got to commit. You've got to give all the way and give up everything for Sue Ellen, and if you can't do that,
- [nearly snarling:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: then stay the hell away from her.
- [goes off]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [drunk and blubbering] If I'd only met you first, Bobby. I would have married you instead of J.R. You're so kind and strong and loving. Just like a man should be.
- Cliff Barnes: [confronted about his affair with Sue Ellen] No, look, believe it: I fell in love with her.
- Bobby Ewing: The only time you fall in love is when you look in the mirror!
- [pushes him onto a couch]
- Bobby Ewing: J.R. said that you wouldn't speak to him yesterday.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I was depressed. It's a shock to find oneself in a sanitarium.
- Jock Ewing: Well, I just don't understand how anyone can get upset over the Ewing name and having money. It sure didn't send me to a sanitarium.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: [in driveway] Well, that was quite a trip, Lucy.
- Lucy Ewing: [unloading parcels from trunk] Grandma, I'm a good driver. You had nothing to worry about.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: [groans as she picks up parcel] You drive a little too fast, Lucy.
- Lucy Ewing: [arms filled with parcels] Oh, I do not. The only time I drove fast was when I passed that truck. But did you see the way he was hogging the highway?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: [stoically] No, I had my eyes closed.
- Lucy Ewing: [bursts out laughing] Oh, Grandma.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [in hospital] What are you doing here?
- Cliff Barnes: What about Sue Ellen?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: She's alive, that's all we know.
- Cliff Barnes: What about the baby?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: She had a boy.
- Cliff Barnes: I wanna see my son.
- [goes off to neonatal care]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Cliff...
- [follows]
- Cliff Barnes: [frail baby] That's him?
- [tearfully:]
- Cliff Barnes: Oh, God! Is he gonna live?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: They don't know.
- [blinks]
- Cliff Barnes: [crying] Well, I know he's mine. And if he lives, he's going to be raised a Barnes, not a Ewing, I swear that!
- [Pamela is tearful as well]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [while he's at coffee vending machine] You know, you never told me what happened when you went to see Sue Ellen.
- Bobby Ewing: Well,
- [retrieves coffee]
- Bobby Ewing: I do know why you didn't go with me. You knew about Cliff and her, didn't ya?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Yeah. I didn't know how to tell you.
- Bobby Ewing: Did you find out from him?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [nods] Yeah.
- Bobby Ewing: What else did he tell ya?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: That it's over.
- Bobby Ewing: That's all?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [earnestly] Yes.
- Bobby Ewing: [sighs] Well, you know what this is gonna do to Mama and Daddy if they find out, don't you?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, I hope Cliff wouldn't do anything foolish.
- Bobby Ewing: I don't think he will.
- [takes sip of coffee from paper cup]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Why? Did you see him?
- Bobby Ewing: [nods darkly] I paid him a visit, yeah.
- [easing Pamela's concern:]
- Bobby Ewing: He's all right. But I felt like killing him for what he did to her, do you understand that?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I think so... Bobby, he already hates the Ewings so much... This is just gonna make it worse.
- [Bobby sighs]
