"Finest Hour" is a story about what happens when you are rich and your country is conquered by an invading force. The Germans come in with a respectful eye wink, but ultimately they own you and your material possessions.
Lieutenant Hanley is wounded while on patrol and Caje rescues him. After commandeering Claude (played by Maurice Marsac) along with his horse & wagon, they are brought to the château of Count & Countess De Roy (excellently played by Ramon Novarro & Luise Rainer.) The Countess digs the bullet out of Hanley and bandages him up. Hanley is reluctant to leave after he begins gathering intelligence information on the Germans currently occupying the château.
Don Tait wrote a good screenplay except that it's a bit far fetched plot wise. Phone tapping equipment right there ready to go - I don't think so. Most countesses would've squealed on the Americans under similar circumstances and broken off relations with the handymen who brought them there. In addition, the Germans would've been far more suspicious than they appeared. Once the story took off though, it was well acted by all involved.
Rick Jason, Luise Rainer, & Ramon Novarro salvaged a relatively unrealistic plot with fine acting. Rainer kicks into high gear after she agrees to spy for the Americans portraying hard core ambivalence on screen. Jason is relentless in his quest to gather intelligence.
It's interesting to note 2 time Oscar winning Luise Rainer is still here living in London at age 104 !
