I was concentrating on the wrong person
biorngm12 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A smartly scripted episode professionally acted throughout, depicting the trials of Brenda working the pitfalls of a group of unforgiving officers and a micro-managing boss.

The episode title refers to the reaction the killer had; the critical moment beyond which a situation inevitably erupts into violence, as one dictionary states. A psychiatrist is found murdered in his office, no immediate sign of any items stolen, personal or otherwise. The collaborating doctor, the psychiatrist's spouse, the parents of a deceased patient, and the minor-aged-patients are all interviewed by different Priority Homicide Division officers. The suspect list begins with an unruly student, then the parents of a fallen student in the drug-study-experiment.

Bottom-line is a psychiatrist is murdered by his fellow collaborating-doctor because of the illicit behavior discovered by the victim involving minors while in the murderer's care. He also caused the coma to the teen-patient by taking her off the medication.

Brenda has Buzz play back interviews of drug dealer and Gretchen Shiller. The drug dealer student speaks, I didn't care, I was getting a placebo anyway. Now Brenda knows, uttering to the dual-screens and Buzz, I was concentrating on the wrong person. Brenda is referring to the drug dealer as the wrong person rather than Gretchen. Det. Gabriel, I'm going to need Gretchen's cell phone again and I want to see your notes from your interview with Dr. Rainey's wife. Brenda has Pope release the officer guarding Dr. Rainey's office, making his files completely accessible. Gretchen Schiller mentions something in her interview and her cell phone records tip Brenda into suspecting the collaborating physician.

An aside to the storyline, the actress portraying Gretchen is Danielle Savre, born August 26, 1988. Episode 5 was filmed before her 17th birthday, the age of the actress & character matches. The detectives were ogling at a sixteen-year-old.

Pope to Flynn, handing Flynn a one-page document, Lieutenant Flynn, Deputy Chief Johnson's authorization for a wire. I want it run through the van and through our electronics room here. You'll have to split up the squad, but you've gotten pretty good at that, haven't you? You leak to the press again, I'll have your stripes. Got it? Lt. Flynn acknowledges. Pope's final orders, give her the authorization, take the night off, let the people here do their job.

More antecedent information: Lt. Flynn will continue his testing of Brenda's patience throughout most of season one, proving he is opposed to having her as boss. Lt. Provenza is so set in his orthopedic ways, he fails to visualize the expertise Chief Johnson brings to the LAPD. Provenza is generally eating when Brenda calls upon him to assist. He thinks the cases are solved before his boss determines the true guilty party, another officer that will be very slow to become a true team player.

Caught in the Act

Warning: Spoilers
A psychiatrist is found murdered in his office, no sign of any items stolen, personal or otherwise. The collaborating doctor, the psychiatrist's wife, parents of deceased patient minors, and minor-aged-patients are all interviewed by the Priority Homicide team officers, including Brenda. The suspect list begins with suspecting a student, then parents of a fallen student in the drug-study-experiment.

Brenda to Gabriel: It's a matter of logic, if Dr. Rainey's files are so important, then why are they still in the victim's office? If Dr. Rainey's files could tell us who murdered him, then why didn't the killer take them?

A drug-dealing teen eliminates himself as a murder suspect as do the parents of a teen succumbing to the drug-study-experiment, but Brenda has to prove their innocence first, then focus on the prime suspect. Provenza is interviewing the teen dealer Eric while others watch in the control room Provenza to Eric: You knifed another boy. Dr. Jerome to Brenda: Somebody must have pulled some strings for this kid, because we weed out kids like him. He should have never been in the study at all. Provenza to Eric: The day Rainey died campus security caught you on tape. Eric: I sneak in every day. I go where my customers are. Dr. Jerome is in the private-video room watching the Gretchen Schiller interview, standing next to Brenda Brenda to Dr. Jerome: Dr. Rainey's wife warned him about kids like that. Dr. Jerome: Leah Rainey sees the worst kids in the city. The victim's wife Leah was a psychiatrist also, working in the same building

The female patient Gretchen Schiller mentions something in her interview and her cell phone call- records tip Brenda into suspecting the collaborating physician. Gretchen to Gabriel: Dr. Rainey did not want me to see my boyfriend anymore either. Gabriel: What did Dr. Rainey have against your boyfriend? Gretchen: When you are that old, you forget I think, what it is like to be in love ... this medication changed my life ... Gretchen: ... if he hadn't put me in that study, I would not have known how to care for someone else The actress portraying Gretchen is Danielle Savre, born August 26, 1988 Fact: Episode 5 was filmed before her 17th birthday, the age of the actress & character matches reality.

While Pope is in Brenda's office talking about other matters, Julio interrupts them Julio to Brenda: ... that good looking girl we had in here yesterday, Gretchen Schiller. She was just rushed to the hospital with convulsions. Brenda greets the Schillers at the hospital Mrs. Schiller: the doctor said they couldn't find any sign of the medicine in her bloodwork. Does that make any sense to you? Brenda: It's beginning to, yes. Brenda to Mr. and Mrs. Schiller: What happened to Gretchen is not your fault.

Brenda is in the electronics room viewing the original interviews of Gretchen and Eric; she is instructing Buzz to play them, rewind and play them again Gretchen ... no side effects Gretchen's mother ... she has even started dating again Brenda: Gretchen's mother was right, she was taking the medication. {Brenda has Buzz play back the same interviews again of drug dealer Eric and Gretchen Shiller} Drug Dealer student: ... I didn't care, I was getting a placebo anyway Brenda: ... I was concentrating on the wrong person Brenda is referring to the drug dealer as the wrong person and/or Gretchen Brenda to Gabriel: Sergeant Gabriel, I'm going need Gretchen's cell phone again and I want to see your notes from your interview with Dr. Rainey's wife Leah.

Brenda is in Pope's office Pope: having a conversation with Brenda to try understanding why she wants the officer guarding Dr. Rainey's office removed, but not taking the files herself, rather making them accessible. This will help make the case Brenda hands Pope an authorization for wearing a wire, because she cannot authorize it herself Brenda sets up traps for the murderer to incriminate himself.

Brenda is sitting in Dr. Rainey's office with the lights off, near a light switch Gabriel and Julio are in the van, Louie and Buzz are in the electronics room, all of the men are listening to Brenda, who is wearing a wire Dr. Jerome enters, he goes to the file drawer, pulls a file, attempts to leave and Brenda turns on the lights Brenda to Dr. Jerome: That happen to be Gretchen Schiller's file, doctor? ... yes, it is Gretchen's file ... Dr. Jerome: After you told me the files were unprotected, with Dr. Dawson knowing ... I got worried ... now that I don't have any records of my own. How is it your office got broken into with a policeman down the hall and why would the drug company steal your files and leave Dr. Rainey's files untouched?

Brenda to Dr. Jerome: May I be honest with you? ... I think you killed Dr. Rainey yourself. I think the file contains information incriminating you and Dr. Rainey was going to report you to the police. My guess is Dr. Rainey gave you a chance to turn yourself into the police, and you paid him back by smashing him over the head with his phone and smothering him to death with the cushion from his sofa. . From Gretchen Schiller's interview, Gretchen said she had a boyfriend Dr. Rainey wouldn't approve. You got the file right there, why don't you open it up and read Dr. Rainey's notes. Now that you have broken into the office and stolen the file, I cannot open it myself, but a judge can.

Dr. Jerome: ... She is a delusional girl, on serious medication.

Brenda: This is so amazing. Holding up Gretchen's cell phone your entire relationship memorialized in text messages. ... In this case it's called murder. Dr. Jerome: How is it murder? You said Gretchen was getting better. Brenda: I lied. She's still in a coma. And the person you have been exchanging text messages all day about accidently switching out Gretchen's medication with a placebo is a forty-five-year-old Chinese-American detective in my office. Tao sends Dr. Jerome the text U R a murderer When I find cases where someone has been sexually abusing a minor, I usually find it is part of a pattern. You said you specialize in adolescents. How closely do you study them? ... transference issues? In law enforcement we call it statutory rape. Maybe you prefer molesting. The officers in the van, Gabriel and Julio, say it is time to leave the van and enter the office

Brenda tells the officers to get him out of here, as Gabriel and Julio enter the office, arresting Dr. Jerome.

Bottom-line a psychiatrist is murdered by his fellow collaborating doctor because of the illegal behavior discovered by the victim involving minors while in his care. He also killed the girl-patient by taking her off the medication.

The fight goes on with some of the officers and Brenda, namely Flynn and especially Taylor. An aside and during the solving of the case, Flynn gets put in his place by Brenda first, then by Pope, on different occasions for different reasons, both well deserved. Flynn came around to Brenda's side, requesting to join her division later in season one, i.e. episode 13. Pope to Flynn: Pope handing Flynn a one-page document Lieutenant Flynn, Deputy Chief Johnson's authorization for a wire. I want it run through the van and through our electronics room here. You'll have to split up the squad, but you've gotten pretty good at that, haven't you? You leak to the press again, I'll have your stripes. Got it? ... Give her the authorization. Take the night off. Let the people here do their job.
