Cheyenne never seems to have really good luck. He manages to get a good job now and then; he even makes some good friends, but sometimes he just steps in crap. This time he stops a stage holdup that is an attempt to free a prisoner, Pete Walton, on his way to execution. What he doesn't know is there was an inside man in on the escape. But the inside man was a woman, Lenore Hanford, who was really Lenore Walton sister to the prisoner. Not just a sister but a full member of the notorious Walton gang. She invites Cheyenne to work for her on her ranch in the hopes of killing him. When Cheyenne shows up, he kills a man who was sent to kill him. It is claimed the dead man is Cheyenne Bodie, and then Cheyenne finds himself on trial for the murder of Cheyenne Bodie. Doesn't look good for Cheyenne as the sheriff is also part of the gang. Lenore will have her revenge and it will all look legal.
But even the best plans have an Achilles heal. This time it's the town deputy, Rankin. Rankin gets suspicious when he hears the town drunk, Creech, talk about Cheyenne. When he takes Creech to the undertakers to identify the body, he says that ain't Cheyenne; but the sheriff barges in and hustles Creech out. When the deputy tries to find Creech to talk more him with him; he finds Creech dead.
So it looks like Cheyenne might have a supporter. Actually, more than a supporter, Rankin isn't just a deputy; he is actually a federal marshal working undercover. Suddenly the action goes into high gear. It seems the director discovered he spent too much too much time on exposition. So, the fixed escape for Cheyenne was actually a set up for an ambush; now the ambush turns into a major shootout featuring Rankin and Cheyenne against the entire Walton gang, including Lenore.
When the smoke clears, it's just Rankin and Cheyenne riding off together talking about splitting the reward for the dead gang. Well, maybe Cheyenne does have some luck after all.
