  Diane Chambers : I just had the funniest stray thought. Do you remember the first tryst you and I shared?

  Sam Malone : Yeah, yeah, I think I had Cheez Whiz on my half.

  Diane Chambers : [Deliberately]  I'm talking about making love.

  Sam Malone : I know.

  [They both laugh] 

  Sam Malone : Yeah, of course I remember - it was great, weren't it?

  Diane Chambers : It was wonderful.

  Sam Malone : Yeah, I think we gave new meaning to the word "cookin'".

  Diane Chambers : Sometimes I thought it would go on forever.

  Sam Malone : Hey, I came pretty darn close of a couple of times, didn't I?

  Diane Chambers : That's not what I meant.

  [Both laugh] 

  Diane Chambers : You were wonderful.

  Sam Malone : Yeah, you were pretty wonderful yourself.

  Diane Chambers : It can be so wonderful, can't it Sam?

  Sam Malone : You bet.

  Diane Chambers : Thank god there's no danger of all of that that starting up again.

  Sam Malone : [Looks uncomfortable]  Right!, whooh, we know what kind of hell that would lead to.

  Diane Chambers : Amen!

  [They look at each other, acknowledging their mutual desire. However, because they know another relationship between them would be a bad idea, they sublimate their desire by eating celery sticks. Eating had also been a theme in the other story about why Woody and Beth got fatter when they were together, as they had sublimated their desires with food. The final scene shows Sam and Diane's table full of food, being eaten as quickly as possible by both of them, as they order more with full mouths] 

  Diane Chambers : .

  Sam Malone : We must come back.
