The Dream Team
Hitchcoc18 August 2019
Diane has been studying for her finals and is taking a nap in Sam's office. We quickly hear that the sociopath Andy has escaped from prison. Diane is fixated on his intentions. Meanwhile, Sam has opened an area of the basement and put in a wine cellar. Soon all the regulars find themselves down there. But that's only the beginning. Hilarious episode.

"Was I the one murdering you? Did I help in anyway?"

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode there's basically one storyline: Diane has a nightmare in wich Andy Andy has escaped from prison, she wakes up to find that Andy Andy really is back and asks her help. This was a delightful episode, although basically everything in it , it's a dream, it worked excelent. Andy Andy it's such a fun and dubious character , you never know what you're gonna get with him, the misterious plot in the beggining in the wine cellar it's all very well done, and the fact that it was all a nightmare it's even better because it distracts us that we are still in a dream, it does become very obvious that it's again a dream when Sam reveals he is an intelectual mind with great skills and his dumb ways are a manner to attract clients, it was hilarious all the way. And it showed us Diane's most fearful thoughts as well as her most desirable thoughts. MVP: Diane Chambers . 8/10 Peter Shelby

Diane's Nightmare (#4.5)

Warning: Spoilers
Diane has a dream that Andy Andy has escaped and there is a power outrage and she goes to the cellar and there he is. Then she wakes up and tells it to the guys, Frasier tells her that he spoke to Andy Andy and knows that he is a different guy now. Then Andy Andy comes and asks for a favor to pretend to his girlfriend that they are his friends. Diane agrees as everyone else they should do it to give him a chance to start over after all of this Dian finds out that Sam is in reality very smart and then she wakes up again.

A great episode. It was great for them to bring Andy Andy as he is a fun character. The idea of the episodes and all the twists are very well written. Although I did figure out that it is again a dream when she talks to Sam in the office. They wouldn't ruin his character like this!

One of the most intricate and clever and wild (for a Cheers episode)
johncordamusic4 February 2021
I have been rewatching Cheers in its entirety to take in the full story and character arcs and of course the great situation comedy gold, that although dated at times, still holds up fantastically. I watched much if not most of the show when I was growing up through the 80s.

This one is one of those all-out wacky sitcom episodes where anything goes, and the clever moments and twists are truly special here. Brings back the Andy character from Season 1, and in general kinda mind f$#% you overall the way the episode carries out. Very fun.

I don't plan to review too many more individual Cheers episodes, so I will just add that I wish there was some kind of Coach retrospective or a little more written into the season where he is no longer, at least more than "you didn't hear? Oh yea he died."

And finally that a documentary about the show's more than decade run and with cast and creator input would have been a treat, but I don't believe it has happened, nor is it likely that it will. There is an hour long feature with the show's creators and George Wendt however. I think, I'm waiting to watch that.

A Look Into Diane's Subconscious
dgplatt-6012111 April 2024
Cheers has done dream sequences before, but this is the first time dreams have fuelled an entire episode. Tropes like dreams-within-dreams and "It Was All A Dream... Or Was It?" can devolve into cliche, but here they work well.

Diane is upset by Andy Andy's release from prison, and sure enough he shows up with his new girlfriend, Cynthia* in tow. He has created a twisted narrative to impress her, and to Diane's dismay the rest of the bar goes along with it.

This is a funny, creepy episode perfect for Halloween, and while Cheers went back to the holiday a few more times it's a shame they didn't make it an annual tradition. What's really interesting is how the episode provides a window into Diane's psyche. We see Sam, Frasier and the rest of the gang through Diane's eyes, and it's clear that she is still stuck on her Magnificent Pagan Beast. The ending takes this into a whole new territory, landing on a perfect punchline.

*Cynthia is played by future Simpsons star Nancy Cartwright, making this an early meeting between the voices of Bart Simpson and Sideshow Bob. It's a fun bit of trivia, but sadly the future nemeses don't really interact much here.
