The One With Dishwalla...
taylorkingston28 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode. It's not one of my favorites but I like it. I couldn't watch it for so long, because my DVD had a scratch, and it wouldn't play this episode. But when I replaced the disc and got to see it again, I was really happy.

In this episode, P3 is struggling a bit. No one seems to be going. They're all going to another club. Dishwalla is one of the biggest bands right now, and they've agreed to play at P3. With the help of Leo mind-controlling the manager. You see, Leo suspects that the manager made a deal with a demon to bring him successful musical acts, in exchange for young girls. The demon swallows them whole, and they have to live and suffer like that for all eternity. Piper is very upset when she finds out that the band doesn't want to play P3, but that Leo made it happen. She is very mad at Leo. Eventually, Jenny, Dan's niece from next door, wants to go to P3 to see the band, but since she is underage, she sneaks in. She is one of Masselin's, the demons, unfortunate victims. Piper, Phoebe and Prue eventually find the demon in the back of the club, and vanquish him with a potion, that the demon must swallow.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10.

A Deal with Dishwala
seneuser9 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, P3s is struggling. It apparently didn't have a great grand opening, which the show skipped, and that means barely anyone knows it exists. Prue and Phoebe are concerned enough to bring an investor into the mix, who you can tell is a scumbag just by looking at him. Of course, that all goes sideways and adds another conflict into the mix.

The central conflict involves a band manager making a deal with a demon to be successful. The band is Dishwala, and in exchange for their success, the manager has to bring young girls to a big ugly demon to be devoured. That only seems fair. Both Leo and Daryl are on the case, as Leo is tracking the demon while Daryl is tracking the missing girls, which leads him to the band manager. Both play excellent roles in this and add to the story.

Leo sets off an argument with Piper when he uses magic to convince the band manager to have Dishwala play at P3s. Despite the fact that this is exactly what P3s needs to be relevant, Piper is mad that Leo brought magical work to her normal work. This seems entirely unreasonable of Piper, but that would become a character trait of hers, being unreasonable at times. She also is deluding herself into thinking maybe she can live a normal life with Dan, the simping neighbor who is befuddled by Leo's sudden appearance. And with that the starting gate is up and the love triangle that dominates the first half of Season 2 is off and running. In my opinion, the love triangle is by far the best thing about Season 2 with the highlights being Old Black Magic, P3 H2O and Awakened.

I get it if the melodrama isn't what other Charmed fans are into, but then this episode won't be a favorite because the melodrama goes up another notch when Jenny, Dan's niece, gets into a tif with Dan and Piper when she is not allowed to go see Dishwala play at the club. Personally, it seems a stretch that a girl of Jenny's age would be that into Dishwala with about 10 boy bands around at that time to soak up her attention.

Regardless, this leads to an eventful night when the scumbag investor, the band manager, the DEMON, Jenny, Leo and Daryl all end up at P3's for the festivities. Ultimately, of course, the demon is vanquished, the band manager busted by Daryl, the girls saved, and the investor convinced to forget that P3's ever existed (Prue uses threats here to solve the possible exposure, something I've pointed out could have been easily done to solve the exposure risk at other times when it comes up).

The Manager of the Devil

Piper is having difficulties to pay the bills of her club P3, and Prue is trying to raise a loan with the investor Chris Barker. Meanwhile, Jeff Carlton has a pact with the demon Masselin to grant fortune as manager of a successful band Dishwall, exchanging for innocent souls to be collected and devoured by Messalin in the concerts. Leo casts a spell in Carlton to bring the band to play in P3, and assigns the Halliwell sisters to vanquish Messalin. Meanwhile, Darryl investigates the disappearance of groupies of Dishwall that disappeared in the gigs and Barker double-cross Prue, trying to buy the club.

"The Devil's Music" is one the best episode of the second season of Charmed up to now, since all the situations are well resolved. The three sisters act together to rescue and save the fans, and also their club from an ambitious investor. Darryl is satisfied with the resolution of the mystery and arrests Jeff Carlton for abduction. Leo casts a spell to make the victims forget their suffering. And in the end, Leo and Piper talk to each other. My vote is ten.

The beginning of an era.
m-4782621 March 2021
Musical guests on the show. My teenage self was living a dream, to have all these cool bands guest starring in one of my favorite TV shows. I wasn't very familiar with it back then, so it was a first for me, through Charmed. I caught up on it later. As far as this episode is concerned, it's also one that introduced me to the series altogether, so it has a special place in my heart. I don't mind its message implying rock is the devil's music, and three of Dishwalla's best songs are featured in it. Decent episode overall, that can be seen as a filler, if it didn't have P3 making its big debut.

The devil's in the details
Realrockerhalloween26 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The devil's music is a great play on parents worst fears their kids are being brainwashed by music lyrics and led astray into darkness. It plays here with Dishwalla's band manager using a demon to make his band famous in exchange for the girls doing anything to meet the band. Still I wonder was Dishwalla aware of the deal in this reality or kept in the dark and if not then do they keep the talents bestowed or wonder what happened to their manager.

Another aspect is Piper wanting a normal life and becomes mad at Leo for using her club for the demon trap even though it put her on the map. Still it leads to great love triangle set up between them and Dan for her affection. I'm glad the writers throw it in to keep everything from being bland and creepy. It opens up the possibility for true drama, love gestures and if they really belong together like morality bites promised.
