A magical moment
owlaurence27 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
A pretty important episode for the series, with a tight plot and some unexpected twists. The magic world and the real world keep colliding very effectively, as the Halliwells try to keep all the strange events in the manor from an over-stressed Piper and a new stepmother. The disappearance of magic makes for some very funny moments as it disrupts the everyday life of all the magical community. Leo's charges call him on the phone, demons have to use cell phones and taxis, and dead demons don't disappear as usual, which forces the sisters to deal with a rather inconvenient corpse. In addition, you have good villains, not too impressive maybe, but definitely fun, and a basic but effective plot to get rid of the Charmed Ones. And by the way, I think by now ALL the family has dated a demon at one point or another.

But the Halliwells are resourceful, as usual. They *almost* manage to make everything look normal, and the non-magical weapons they come up with are hilarious. What do you need self-defense lessons for when you have Paige ? And finally, the high point of the episode is the long-awaited birth, which is shown as a major event in the magical world. It was a nice touch to bring Victor in for that moment, as he is, after all, family. And another significant fact is the "small" detail that shows how the sisters have, finally, managed to change their own future, in case anyone was still wondering.

I only have a few complaints concerning the credibility of some points. - The unicorn just grates me. That it doesn't look magical at all is part of the joke, so I'll let that pass. But there is no way it could have walked up and down the stairs, especially so fast and without anybody hearing. - The scene with all the family helping Piper give birth is beautiful and symbolic. But... anyone notice the guy dying from a knife wound in the corner ???

Great show, BUT, no one, no matter WHO they are, can look as GREAT as Piper does 3 weeks after giving birth.

This should be a GOOF.

When three planets burn as one, over a sky of dancing light, magic will rest on a holy day to welcome the birth of the twice blessed

Warning: Spoilers
The day the magic died deals with Piper's baby being the source of a prophecy. Meanwhile magic is down with no caution to why it's happening leaving the sisters vulnerable to those after the baby. Its a creative concept as its nice to see the sisters come up with ways to deal with evil like using home made bombs or handcuffs to kill demons instead of their powers & potions and spells. I like that the Elders had plans in place to warn them of the power outage by trying to summon Leo, but can't and send a unicorn immune to any shifts in power.

My problems however with the episode is the writers are making every mystical creature or fairy tale character real and using them as deluxe mechanism to never be seen again after their first airing. It feels like they only through them in to advance the plot without a long term plan for them or explaining how they pass unnoticed by the mortal world. Also Victor takes a wife, turns out to be a demon, without any build up or emotional ties to the relationship and he never brings her up again. My last problem with it is baby Wyatt is the twice blessed which were told nothing about why he's chosen and what it entitles leaving much to the imagination without answers. The writers are capable of more in past episodes 61st at this point seem to be phoning it in to meet a quota instead of great story telling for the fans.
