The Spiritual Nexus
claudio_carvalho21 January 2007
After an earthquake, the Halliwell sisters call the gasman to check the smell of gas in the basement. The man is possessed by an evil force, and later Phoebe, who is afraid of the Boogieman, is also possessed. Prue and Piper are expelled from their house and they find that the place is a spiritual nexus, equidistant from the five elements: earth, water, fire, wood and metal. Now evil is living in the house and the two sisters have to fight to rescue Phoebe from the dark side and destroy evil and bring the good and light back to the place.

"Is There a Woogy in the House?" is a reasonable episode of "Charmed". As usual, there are no explanations or consequences for the persons somehow affected by the Halliwell sisters: Andy is only suspended and the fate of the gasman, the professors, and the neighbors is unknown. My vote is seven.

Bad Phoebe = Good Charmed

Warning: Spoilers
An earthquake causes a fissure in the foundation of Halliwell manor, which releases the Shadow, an evil presence that Grams trapped there many years ago. This presence possesses people turning them evil, and since the manor sits on a magical Nexus, that evil spreads to the neighborhood around it.

This is the first time we get to see an evil Phoebe after the Shadow senses vulnerability in her and possesses her. An evil Phoebe usually means a good Charmed episode, as Alyssa obviously savors the darker roles. After she has driven Piper and Prue from the manor, they have to figure out a way to get back into the house and save their sister.

Besides the delight of seeing Alyssa in her element, this episode has a truly frightening monster, and the manor itself seems possessed and getting into the act, handing out electrical shocks at every opportunity and just all around being an element of chaos.

This leads to some entertaining comedy when Prue is forced to host a work dinner at the manor, which of course proves impossible under the present circumstances. Piper is introduced to a new romantic interest that ultimately would go no where. I don't know if the writers were kicking the tires to see if any chemistry would develop or if was just meant to parallel Piper's relationship with Leo from the get go.

Regardless, dark Phoebe is the star here, even introducing a really cool new power - conjuring- where she just literally calls things to appear in her hand. Ultimately, she is the one that has to save the day by remembering Gram's original spell that trapped the Shadow in the basement.

The One With The Shadow...

Warning: Spoilers
I really love this episode. It's one of my all-time favorite episodes from this season, and in my Top 20 from the series. The first time I saw it, when I was about seven years old, the Woogy really creeped me out, and I could really relate to how Phoebe must have felt when she was a child.

In this episode, an earthquake makes a mysterious shadow demon come out of the cracks of the Halliwell Manor's basement. Everything seems alright until a handyman comes to fix a gas leak in the basement, calls for Phoebe's help, and she gets kind of possessed and controlled by the shadowy figure. She has faced this demon once before, and called it the Woogyman, like Boogyman. She almost kills Piper and Prue at one point and then banishes them from the house. Whilst the shadow continues to influence people, Prue and Piper have to find a way to bring their sister back and get her to vanquish the Woogyman, once and for all.

Fun Fact: This is the first time any of the sisters add something to The Book Of Shadows.

Fun Fact: We discover that Phoebe was born in the Manor.

Fun Fact: This is the first time Phoebe turns evil.

First appearance of: Penny "Grams" Halliwell

Demon appearances: The Woogyman (Nexus)

Spells: I am light, I am one too strong to fight, return to dark where shadows dwell, you can not have this Halliwell! Now go away and leave my sight, and take with you this endless night.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking Ridonkulous.

What is lurking in the house?

A great episode which show plays all the reasons I love this show and one of my favorites. Milano gives a great performance played innocently and slick. You could tell she really loved The script and ate it up on The screen.

The woogy is the stuff of nightmares and actually very creepy. I like how they really ingrained his history to a past character, his motives and resting place. His character is truly memorable and ranks number 3 on my list of villains. I cant praise the writers enough for the gold mine they struck here and wish they had kept it up.

The sisters each have separate stories that add to the main and advance the story. Each prove why all three are needed and why they work so well together. This is one episode you can't miss.

"You Cannot Have This Halliwell"

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. So, this episode starts off just after an earthquake strikes San Francisco. The sisters are fine, but they want to ensure that everything is properly functioning, so they call a repairman. He goes into the basement and notices a strange crevice in the floor. Out of curiousity, he pried open the crack and the Woogyman (what Phoebe called the Boogyman when she was very young) and was possessed by it. Not much time passes until Phoebe, after being teased by her two sisters about the Woogyman, comes down to help the repairman (at least I think that's what happens, I don't really remember this part all that well). Inevitably, she is possessed by this Woogyman and slowly turns evil. At this point, everything goes increasingly awry. At first, Piper and Prue experience small electrical shocks when entering various thresholds of the manor. However, these shocks and other anomalies become increasingly apparent. Then in a shocking turn of events, Phoebe banished her own sisters from the manor, indicating the Woogyman taking over her thoughts and actions. After acquiring a bit more information about the Halliwell Manor, the two sisters devise a plan to reenter their home. Chaos ensues when the house's evil spreads to neighbors houses. After consulting the Book of Shadows, the Piper and Prue remember that their grandmother told a story about the Boogyman. However, they were unable to recall what was said to defeat it. As they are trying to recall what was said, Phoebe finds them and tries to kill them. The two sisters run away from her but are cornered in the basement where they have nowhere left to go. At the climax of this episode, Phoebe touches a framed photo of her grandmother by the threshold of the basement where she received a premonition of her grandmother fighting the Woogyman. She then gathers the strength to resist the Woogyman's tight grip and recites the vanquishing spell at the end of their grandmother's story: "I am light, I am one too strong to fight; Return to dark where shadows dwell, You cannot have this Halliwell; Go away and leave my sight, And take with you this endless night!" Everything returns back to normal after uttering the rhyme as any damage done to the house's infrastructure and decorations is reversed and everyone whom the Woogyman possessed was free from its hold.

As much as I loved this episode, I must admit there was one thing that bothered me about it. Phoebe was born in the Halliwell manor, which was revealed to have been built not only equidistant from the five spiritual elements, but in the middle of a pentagram, thus serving as a spiritual nexus. Because of being born on a spiritual nexus, she is unique in the sense that she is more easily lured to either side of the perpetual conflict between good and evil. However, she was the one who not only exhibited the most resistance in turning evil when compared to everyone else the Woogyman had possessed, but she was able to but she was able to stave off this evil and other aberrations in behavior for several hours. Despite this, I found the episode to be refreshing take on every child's nightmare, and I highly encourage you all to watch this episode.
