The Power of Love
claudio_carvalho21 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
On Friday, 13th, the Demon of Fear attacks thirteen witches every 1300 years and feeds with their greatest fear. While looking with Prue for a good luck charm for a job interview on the next morning, Phoebe logs her name in a promotional list in the Wicca shop to have a discount. The owner is killed of heart attack motivated by the demon, and he gets the names and addresses of San Francisco's witches in the list, killing immediately three of them of fear. When he traps Prue and Phoebe in a house, they are saved by the power of love of their mother.

"Eternal Fear" is another good episode of this series. Billy Drago performs an evil spirit that seems to be tailored for his mean face. Piper has a lesson about superstition when she loses the best catch of San Francisco and Phoebe gives a lesson of good character. My vote is eight.

The Demon and the Hour have Arrived
seneuser13 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here finally we get the demon from which all future demons are modeled. My second favorite demon of all time - Barbas - (second only to Belthazar/Cole).

Billy Drago looks every bit the part. He oozes deadly confidence and sneering hatred of all witches, and there has never been a demon who took more delight in his work than this one. His habit of passing the shadow of his hand over his victim's face to learn their greatest fear is very cool and creepy.

Barbas is mowing down witches on the way to the thirteen victims he needs until he makes life more difficult by targeting Prue. He would have killed her by drowning her in the shower, except Andy and Morris showed up in the nick of time. Andy and Morris are then rewarded with lies about what happened, and that whole charade is getting tiresome.

Barbas can imitate voices and tricks Phoebe into showing up at a house with a pool. Phoebe thinks she is safe because dying in an elevator is her worst fear, until Barbas reveals that watching a sister die is her true worst fear. With the pool there and Phoebe as bait, Barbas can now kill two sisters at once. He uses Phoebe's voice and lures Prue into the same trap.

This episode features more of the sister's mom - Patty - than we have previously seen, and in a homage to a similar scene in "Always," mom saves Prue, who now strengthened by resolve can use her powers on Barbas.

We will see many of these same themes returned to in Season 2 with the excellent H2O.

Fortunately, Barbas would be back.

What's your greatest fear?
Realrockerhalloween9 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
From fear to eternity feature a recurring and my number one favorite Demon of fear Barbas. Billy Drago always makes his guest spots memorable from his expressions, delivers of lines and the ecstasy he gains from inducing fear. What makes him different is he can only appear on Friday the 13th at first every 1300 years, paralysis his victim and literally scare them to death. I've never seen so much creative ideas flow in a supernatural shop's first season.

Even though he eventually comes over used his first appearance never left me and it even showed a side to the girls we'd never see otherwise. Prue is shown fearful for once and given a chance to shine when she finally tells her family how much she loves them growing past her fears doing so will make her lose them like her parents. Piper never seemed superstitious before, I'm glade she realized how silly it was by the end, yet her concern was spot on. Phoebe grew even more into a fine young woman as she refuses to cover up her boss's affair, justifying leaving the job over it, and you learn her greatest fear is losing a sister. Poor Phoebe will face this soon enough and it hits close to home.

Yet the only fault in this wonderful episode is it never explains how Party knows about the demon to help her daughters out even though he only appears every 1300 years. Besides this minor detail it was true my horrifying, uplifting and heart warming.

The One With The Demon Of Fear...
taylorkingston7 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's one of my all-time favorite episodes, from this season, as well as the entire series.

In this episode, it's Friday the 13th, and every 1300 years, Barbas, the Demon Of Fear comes back to Earth. And if he can kill thirteen unmarried witches by midnight, he will be resurrected to wreak havoc every single day. His power is unique. He can read anyone's fears and use them against them. He attacks them by making their worst fears come true, which basically gives them heart attacks. Another thing that doesn't help the witches is that when they're up against their fears, their powers become paralysed. Prue tries to destroy the demon after he kidnaps Phoebe. He uses Prue's fear of drowning to try and kill her, but whilst in the water, she sees her deceased Mother, who tells her it's alright. This gives her the strength to get out of the water, use her powers against Barbas, and then at midnight, he is sent back to wherever he came from.

Fun Fact: The events take place on Friday the 13th, this is significant as it is also the 13th episode of the series.

First appearance of: Barbas, the Demon Of Fear.

Best part of the episode: When Barbas is defeated.

Worst part of the episode: When Barbas almost drowns Prue in her shower.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking Ridonkulous.
