A Second Chance
claudio_carvalho20 May 2007
Paige has an unresolved trauma since she blames herself for the death of her parents in a car wreck. Leo summons the spirit of time Clyde and goes back to the past guiding Paige in the 90's to revisit the tragic day of the accident and resolve her guilty complex. Meanwhile, the spirits of a couple of criminals possess the bodies of Phoebe and Cole to finish an assignment of fifty years ago.

"A Paige from the Past" is a delightful episode of Charmed. The story is beautiful and well-resolved, with the participation of all the lead characters. Rose McGowan really looks like a teenager, with brace and old-fashioned clothes and hair-style. My vote is nine.

A much needed episode, to know more about Paige this season.

Warning: Spoilers
Out of the last three episodes, « Muse to my ears » is the one I prefer. It's still a very forgettable episode, but unlike « Brain Drain » which couldn't/wouldn't keep the suspense longer, and « Black As Cole », it manages to grab your attention throughout. « A Paige from the past » gave Rose McGowan her moment to shine, and she did all the way. It's a real tear jerker, in which we see how good she could be at acting in more dramatic scenes. It's not exactly a filler either, because that's where we know more about her character and her backstory. Unfortunately, the watered down way the network decided to go with this season, still interferes with the intensity of some of her scenes. And the fact that they mixed 1994 with 1998, with that Bride of Chucky doll, is a little off putting... Phoebe and Cole being possessed by Bonnie and Clyde type characters, was a fine sub plot as well. And a way to make things even more exciting for us viewers.

The One Where Paige Goes Back In Time...

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my all-time favorites episodes of Charmed. Not only in Season 4, but in the entire series. It's so funny and I love how we get to find out more about Paige, since she's the new sister.

In this episode, Paige is still traumatised from her parents death. They died in a car crash when she was in high school. Paige never forgave herself because she was a crappy child, at the time, and because she somehow got out of the car before the crash. Leo calls upon a demon who will let them travel back to the day, so Paige can finally get some closure. Leo takes her back to the '90s, where Paige is now in her former-self's body. She freaked out because she thought she was observing, not participating. Paige tries desperately to make up to her parents for the smoking, the drinking and the cutting school. She explains that she makes something good of herself and they did a good job as parents. But then she tries to change the past, and make the car crash never happen. Unfortunately, you can't change the past, and Paige's parents still got in a car crash, and still died. Paige had actually orbed out of the car, that's how she survived. Meanwhile, two spirits of criminals from decades ago, escape from the spirit world, (the one the demon who took Paige and Leo back controls) and they possess Phoebe and Cole. They steal an engagement ring and a wedding dress and want to get married. Darryl and Piper must stop them before they hurt anyone else. Cole gets shot and the spirits are sent back to the realm they came from. Leo gets back just in time to save Cole's life. And Phoebe and Cole decide to get married.

Fun Fact: There is a Scream poster in Paige's bedroom, and Rose McGowan played a character in the movie.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking ridonkulous.

Paige's past

Warning: Spoilers
A Paige from the past deals with the loss of Paige's foster parents when she was sixteen. Going back in time she realizes their death wasn't her fault and she was meant to survive to reconstitute the charmed ones. Meanwhile two ghosts possess Phoebe and Cole to fulfill their desire to get married. Rose McGowan delivers a wonderful performance as you see the sadness and guilt oozing from her pores as she tells her sisters about the fight causing the car accident. You can't help but want to taking her in your arms to comfort her grieving heart and tell her it wasn't her fault. One of my favorite moments is when her foster parents come back at the end to tell her how proud they are and love her like real parents would.

While Phoebe previously rejected Cole's proposal its revealed she wanted to, but was afraid to commit not wanting to grow up to fast. At least at the end Cole finally gets his biggest desire when she works through her issues of maturity and agrees to marry him. My only complaints is Clyde who opens a portal for them yet The Elders are capable and they never consider the possibility to jumble the mythology. Another this was a perfect opportunity to bring back Glenn since they supposedly were best friends their whole lives. The last was Piper covering up the ghosts crime spree without much work with it left up in the air If they closed the case or not and if Phoebe was still wanted instead of an easy fix. If these issues had been worked out it would be a perfect ten yet the writers choose to be lazy and seem to want only shiny cool special effects instead of substance which the script was headed for.
