Another Halloween in Sunnydale
katierose2955 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's Halloween in Sunnydale again and that usually means trouble. According to the rules of evil, demons and other baddies are suppose to stay in on Halloween night. The commercialization and human taint of the holiday annoys them. But, just about every year, some monster-y thing breaks tradition and causes trouble in the Dale. This time it's a haunted frat house. Buffy and the gang are soon trapped inside and forced to live out their deepest fears. This isn't my favorite episode. It has some interesting parts. But honestly, if you're in a hurry to get through season four and watching the season on DVD, you could probably skip "Fear Itself" and not miss much.

The episode revolves around the Scoobies celebrating Halloween at at haunted house. Unfortunately, somebody has accidentally summoned a demon, which is causing everyone's deepest fears to become real. Xander has become invisible to his friends. Willow's magic is out of control and it's scaring her. Oz turns into a werewolf and accidentally hurts Willow. Buffy is alone in a basement, with only the dead for company. It's up to Giles and Anya to get them out of the haunted house and save the day.

Interestingly, a lot of the these "fears" actually come true as time goes on. Xander is losing touch with the Buffy and Will. They are going to college and he's still stuck at home, a conflict that will finally come to a head at the end of this season. ("The Yoko Factor.") Willow's use of magic does land her in trouble. (Season six's "Wrecked.") The werewolf part of Oz is going to take out of control of him. (Season fours "New Moon Rising") And Buffy, on possibly her last night on earth, will choose a basement with a dead guy over everybody else. (Season seven's "Chosen.") Even Anya's fear of bunnies will follow her through out the rest of the series. It's just a shame that Giles doesn't get a nightmare vision in this episode.

There are some good parts to the episode. I love Oz's "God" costume. It's probably the greatest Halloween get-up ever and all it is is a name tag. You just have to laugh when Buffy mutters, "Thank the Lord." Oz's responds, "You're welcome." And anytime they bring up season two's "Halloween" is fun. Worried that he'll once again turn into his costume, Xander dresses up in as Agent 007. When you live in Sunnydale, you have to learn to be prepared for anything. Also, Giles and Anya, "making" a door in the haunted frat house is great. The two of them play off of each other so well. They're both so sure that they're the "reasonable" member of the group. Next season they'll be getting on each other's nerves full time at the Magic Box, so it's fun to see them here just starting to bicker. I also sort of like the teeny little monster at the end. "Don't taunt the fear demon... It's just tacky."

On the downside, the episode is a lot like season one's "Nightmares," where the gangs worse fear come to life and scare them. It's also kind of like "Restless," at end of this season, which will do a better job of dealing with the hidden insecurities of the Scoobies.

My favorite part of the episode: Anya's "scary" bunny costume.

Season 4 the best season so far
nicofreezer20 May 2022
4 episodes, 4 great episode, Buffy 4th season is clearly off to the best start comparing to the first 3 solid seasons, but not as good as the 4th. Im finally starting to fall in love for the show, the passage to college was really a game changer, also no more Buffy Angel boring love plotline. The Era of Buffy at 8pm and Angel at 9pm is way better than the first 3 years as for now.

This episode makes me think of a famous x files episode " how the Ghost stole christmas" , with a lot lot of similar plot point, The x files episode beeing even better (10/10) For this one i give 8.5/10, love the comedy in it and the ending !

Oz gets the best lines!
drnikic20 April 2021
Ok, I'm just going to say it. I never warmed to Riley. And he may have been joking but he IS pompous.

We also see the start of conflicts over Willow's use of magic, and Buffy isolating herself from the group. These are not just part of the "fear scenarios" they become ongoing issues the rest of the series.

A Halloween episode which provides both scares and laughs
Tweekums1 April 2019
It is Halloween again and one of the fraternity houses is throwing a 'haunted house' party; unfortunately one of the decorations is a symbol copied from a book on demons. The party is inevitably going to be much scarier than planned. Initially Buffy isn't keen to attend as she is still upset after what happened with Parker but turns up, dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, and joins Willow, Oz and Xander. They enter the house and things quickly get scary; something is causing everybody's fears to become real. Anya arrives slightly late, by then the house's door has vanished and as she looks a window similarly disappears, so she goes to get help from Giles.

This was a top quality episode; the haunted house contained elements that are genuinely scary at times. This includes some fairly gruesome items by the standard of the show. It also provides some funny moments; particularly at the episode's conclusion. The scares are nicely varied as they relate to each person's fears so Buffy feels abandoned, Willow imagines her magic going wrong etc. Other highlights, which I won't describe in too much detail are Anya's choice of 'scary' costume and Giles entrance to the house at the end of the film. It must be admitted that the final confrontation isn't scary... it is however very funny. Overall a really enjoyable episode.

One of the best BtVS episodes
drago-jelisic12 May 2008
I didn't know what to expect of this episode. Well as most of the names of Buffy episodes you don't know what to expect. But what I saw was beyond of what I had thought it would be like.

Humour, Horror and Happening aren't they the greatest combination for an episode? Fear, itself contains more of it.

I haven't laughed so much - because of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode! But as well as I laughed I was a bit scared (though I am not so easy frightened).

For me this is one of the greatest BtVS shows. But talking about best BtVS episode - every episode has one emotion. The emotions that Becoming Part 2 gave me and many others are incomparable with this one.

Anyway, this is a episode that MUST be watched!

"Fear, Itself" is Halloween fun
jaywensley200421 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For a horror show, there are few episodes of BtVS dedicated to Halloween. "Fear, Itself," is, for me, the most fun. It is the consummate "stand alone" episode, contributing virtually nothing to the Buffy canon save the show's best running gag, which involves Anya's choice of costume.

This episode does resolve some personal and er...personnel issues among the Scoobies. Thanks to a haunted frat house, each member of the gang has their worst fear brought to the fore, and by that confrontation they take big steps in addressing them.

But what "Fear, Itself" is about is scary laughs. From the frat boys interactions in setting up the house (college versions of preadolescent Halloween gags) to the Scoobie's costume choices (Willow and Oz team up for the best pairing since Jo...nope, not gonna tell). And the finale is a gag brilliantly set up by the entire episode; but true to Whedon/BtVS custom, with a huge (pun intended) moral.

Whedon used BtVS to create new versions of traditional stories. He consistently found a twist that made even the most over-worked tropes fresh and uniquely "Buffy." "Fear, Itself," is as great an example of this as any episode; a Haunted House story that surprises and provokes laughs.

The One With The Fear Demon...
taylorkingston18 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's creepy and a little spooky at times, but it's also funny. Especially when Anya dresses up as a bunny rabbit.

In this episode, it's Halloween and everyone goes to a party at a fraternity house. But things become very spooky, very quickly. People get separated, people's fears are coming true, everyone's screaming. When Buffy finds out that a Fear Demon is doing this, she has to convince everyone to not be scared, as their fear is feeding the demon. When the demon comes forth, she's able to step on it, as he is the size of two cockroaches.

Fun Fact: One of the only three Halloween episodes.

Best part of the episode: Three-way tie between Anya dressed up as a bunny, seeing the tiny, little Fear Demon and Giles saying "actual size" about the demon.

Worst part of the episode: When all the fake props become real, some of its really creepy.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.

Let's play dress up
Joxerlives5 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Fear Itself

The Good; Buffy does a Halloween ep once every couple of years and it's always special, this is no exception. The Scoobies face and overcome their fears and the final gag is fantastic. Also love the postmodern gag of Buffy hitting the demon only to find out it's a guy in a Halloween mask (presumably a student rather than a local who'd know better).

The Bad; Would the Scoobies ever really watch horror films like Phantasm? Don't they get enough gore?

Best line; Giles; "Actual size!"

Character death; Only the guy who breaks his neck falling down the stairs

Jeez!; What's the story with the girl in the tiara on the couch who appears dead then grins maniacally at the camera?

Kinky dinky; The frat boys think Halloween is all about 'getting laid'. Interestingly Willow's crush Tina Fey in her film Mean Girls says it's all about allowing girls to dress up in slutty male-fantasy costumes whilst keeping their reputation intact. Buffy gets grabbed all over by the hands in the cellar (anyone else reminded of the Evil Dead series) and was I the only one to think 'Boy you can see up her skirt' when Buffy crushes the demon at the end?

Calling Captain Subtext; Willow "What is college for if not experimentation?" Hmmmm? She also begs "Oz don't leave me"

Scoobies to the ER; Buffy cut but not too badly

Where's Dawn? Adore the scene with Buffy and Joyce it's so precious. You wonder what costume Dawn wore trick or treating? Is Joyce taking her this year? Joyce comments that she's not the social butterfly she used to be in LA, as we see in Buffy; The Movie. She now knows that Ted was a robot (as Dawn does in IWMTLY).

Questions and observations; The first sign of Anya's bunny phobia. The first encounter between the Scoobies and The Initiative (aside from Out of Sight, Out of Mind?). Anya comments that it's been a week since she and Xander had sex so we must assume that each ep in the Buffyverse is a week in real time. Uncle Rory mentioned again and Willow is still scared of spiders which she overcomes by the time of Selfless. The guiding spell that goes wrong for her is reminiscent of the one Tara uses successfully in Bargaining pt2. Xander uses the old 'Standing right here' Scooby line. At least Anya knocks on Giles' door which is progress. The ghouls at the frat party are very Evil Dead

Read an interesting fanfic once where Michael Myers from the Halloween series shows up in season 3 Sunnydale and kills Joyce and Faith. In the follow-up story however the Nerd Trio capture him and use his blood to bring them back to life, I think the author's point being that heroism and villainy is sometimes just a question of timing and circumstances (which you can certainly make the case for with characters such as Andrew, Amy, Faith etc?)

Marks out of 10; 6/10

The 2nd Halloween Episode
ossie8514 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Buffy, Xander, Oz and Willow are invited to a party but a magical mishap causes the house to be possessed by a fear causing demon, separating the gang. This then leaves Anya and Giles to save the day. Buffy is also still trying to get over Parker.

Why It's So Good - A great way to show the fears of each of our heroes, which shapes up future episodes well. The episode also has some great funny moments, particularly when Anya is on screen.

Watch Out For - Giles' chainsaw and Lord Oz.

Quote - "Maybe it's because of all the - horrific things we've seen, but hippos wearing tutus just don't unnerve me the way they used to." - Oz after Xander rented Fantasia instead of Phantasm.

The Halloween show
Realrockerhalloween2 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Fear, itself is a great follow up to the first Halloween special where the gang attend a haunted house on campus where a demon brings your worst fears to life. I find it powerful as it reveals that OZ is afraid of losing control of his werewolf side, Xander feels like a nobody while every one attends college, Willow her magic will consume her and Buffy that she'll always be alone even when she dies. It follows the trend of men in her life leaving Buffy thinking there's something wrong with her. Also Xander feels as though he didn't make the right choices during high school and now doomed to be a loser working off jobs without friends or a girl. Willow & OZ have always practiced their abilities openly now we realize that they are afraid it will spiral out of control and hurt someone.

The demon on the other hand was small with a big build up and yet works beautifully. His prophesy that in the end they will reject you actually isn't playing on a fear but comes true later on proving that a slayer is destined to be alone by either death or they no longer wish to be part of the fight. Maybe their abilities turn them against the champion of good and thus rob her of companion. Anything's possible in the Buffy verse with no one immune to its harming effects or death as it will be shown in later seasons.

Promising Episode, Silly Conclusion
claudio_carvalho21 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In the Halloween night, Buffy is very depressed due to her non-corresponded feelings for Parker, and Willow, Oz and Xander convince her to go to a famous Halloween party in a fraternity with them to have some fun. Anya is also invited by Xander to join the group. However, while decorating the place previously, one of the hosts paints a magic symbol, the Mark of Gachnar, on the floor, awaking the Fear Demon Gachnar that is fed by fear, bringing panic and horror to the house.

"Fear, Itself" is the best episodes of the Fourth Season of Buffy up to this moment, with a story that recalls 1986 "House", showing surrealistic and funny situations. Unfortunately, the conclusion of the episode, with Buffy squashing Gachnar as if it were a cockroach, and Giles finding that the drawing of the demon in the magic book has a note informing that it is in actual size is absolutely silly. The attempt of make a funny episode did not work well, but it entertains. My vote is seven.
